I actually got to play with him at a Jazz clinic in Iowa, probably 1978 or 79. It was one of the great thrills of my life.

Yet another great loss to the music world. Joe Morello was a great musical pioneer that made way for other great drummers such as Jerry Granelli and Mickey Hart , etc... A style of approaching rhythms and meters leading to a wider spectrum of musical interpretation .
I send my respect and condolences.

Saw him perform at a Drum Clinic here in Houston in the 60's. A very soft spoken, unassuming gentleman with tremendous talent. Learned a lot about odd time signature rhythms from his work. No doubt he influenced my bass playing having studied his techniques as a drummer.

I saw him at a Drum clinic in my home town of Dudley UK, probably late 60s. He was asked by a member of the audience why he hadn't got a double bass drum set up (you will remember that they were all the rage then). He then proceeded to play what a lot of drummers were playing with both of their feet and two bass drums BUT just using his one foot and one bass drum. Staggeringly effective and almost without saying anything.
