Last night I saw two Alembic club members play Alembic instruments in different venues on the same night; a rare accomplishment on a par with planet alignment, rainbows, and other cool stuff.
First up was Art's new band Fifty Year Flood at the Garage in Asheville. This was the band's debut, and they played a 45 minute set of originals. Their lead singer has a nice voice, pleasingly delivered, and pleasantly different. The other pieces were two guitars, keys, bass and drums, with the keyboard player also providing sax and harmonica. The lead player's approach was interesting in that he seemed to focus on creating sound textures with effects. Art's bass lines were a great addition to the overall sound, providing movement that made the originals much more interesting. The band had a great reception from the crowd.
Next up was Adam's band Zoso at the Orange Peel. This was my first time seeing Zoso; they are, as you might expect, a very good show. And the crowd loved them. Adam is a great keyboard player. At one point the other band members left the stage, and Adam had an extended keyboard solo that was very nice! He also played two tunes on mandolin and one on acoustic guitar while I was there. And he's laying down bass lines with his foot pedals while doing the above. And of course he played some bass too; very nice lines. The band is good. The singer, guitar player, drummer and Adam all contribute performances for which the crowd is very appreciative.
Two days earlier, both Adam and Art dropped by the house for an improptu jam. Art and I get together often, but it was the first time I had met Adam; and he's a great guy! I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with him. As you would expect, he's a great player with really nice technique.
So I got to hear the music of two enjoyable bands, both driven by Alembic club bass players, on the same night. It was a very nice evening!

Wow! That's pretty cool! How long will it be before the planets align like that again?
