To determine the scale length of an instrument, measure from the nut to the 12th fret, then multiply that number times two. Thus, if your measurement from the nut to the 12th fret is 17", then you have a 34" long scale bass. 16" would be a 32" medium scale bass and 15 3/8" would be a 30 3/4" short scale bass.
