There have been a few threads concerning perceived phase shift by members who are using both the full range output and one of the crossover outputs at the same time. For instance, you may be running the full range output through one side of your power amp and on to a 2x12 cab and running the high end crossover output through the other power amp channel and on to a 2x10. When doing this, some members report hearing a reduction in bass response because the outputs are out of phase with each other. James Brown reported, after a conversation with Ron, that the reason for this is that "when ever a signal goes through a crossover network, the laws of physics dictate that there will be a phase shift. The amount and direction (lead or lag) of shift is dependent on the frequency measured and cross over design". The "resolution" for this appears to be that you need to reverse the polarity going to one of the speakers. If you are using banana plugs, just plug it in backwards to reverse the polarity. If you are using quarter inch jacks, rewire the jack at one end of the cable. An interesting discussion on this subject can be found here. (Message edited by davehouck on May 26, 2005) |
