There is a very good discussion of headstock construction here. Generally, on neck through Alembics the headstock is attached to the neck using a scarf joint. The headstock is given strength with laminates on both the front and back. On set neck Alembics the headstock and neck are one piece (except the wings, being wider than the neck, are glued on), there are no back laminates and a volute is used to add strength.
