It doesn't happen often, but every once in a while a pickup might fail.

A club member reported that a pickup on his Series bass had quit working. He switched the pickup leads in the control cavity and confirmed that it was the pickup and not some other component. He also reported that the pickup was microphonic.

In response, Mica posted:

It sounds like the pickup had a catastrophic failure if I understand right that the .. pickup was microphonic no matter which channel it was plugged into ... You could send your pickup back for confirmation, but if it is a failure, there isn't any repair that can be done. If you measure the pickup with an ohmmeter, it would read infinity.
