3766
Saturn rings with good contrast from background and very interesting central area (difficult to capture in a picture-look on the left board, upper right side)

I really like this one. Is that "interesting center area" kind of like a flame pattern, or is the picture playing tricks on me?

How would you pattern this on a small standard? Maybe upside down to maximize the appearance of that interesting figure across the top, and reverse the bookmatch from the bottom for the back?

It is a cool piece - it may have been Chip's top pick in this last group I posted. You can see a larger image of this wood, and maybe see that little wiggly flamey part.

This is only enough wood for one laminate. Here's a reversed/inverted view of the same board:

I'm glad that Chip usually decides how to chop these up.

Thanks, Mica! How would you/Chip recommend laying out a small standard top on this wood to feature the wiggly flamey part? I didn't go for a bookmatch to center on my order, but I would consider the upgrade if the wood dictates that it should be. No one should ever deny the wishes of the wood!

If I take this for my top, do you have a recommendation for the back? 3767 looks like it may have been a near neighbor of this piece and I'd love great wood on both sides, but I don't want to be too greedy.

3767 might be other end of a once longer board, and is a good match. I also neglected to include the link to the larger image before.

It's hard to say what will look best - both ends and flips of the board have merit. When I take the bookmatch pictures, I'm presenting my first instinct as to how I would orient the board. In this case, I liked the idea of including some of the darker areas in the wide part of the body, and smashing the template all the way up to the top to include the little flecky-flamey bits right up around the fingerboard.

This arrangement is lovely, but then the little flamey parts will have to become box tops someday since we'd miss them all together:

It's always hard to decide how to slice up a perfectly nice piece of lumber. You might focus in on one detail that is appealing, then find another part to fall in love with, only to find that both won't fit on the workpiece.

Sometimes, I'd rather just put a frame around it and hang it on the wall.

I know that Chip was drawn to the part I pointed out in the original post as it's the most atypical feature of this board, though it isn't the most dramatic.

Decisions, decisions...

Thanks, Mica!

It seems that Chip has "the eye" and should be heeded. This is my 2nd favorite of all the cocobolo shown. First is the piece listed as #3528 Dark Layers under the Tribute section.

That said, I'd love to get Chip's recommendation for the pieces he'd most like to turn into an SC Deluxe. It is not supposed to be to center (but I'll pay for it if the wood dictates) and the neck is deluxe laminates with ebony in the middle, if that matters to select the best coloration for the woods. Note that I want an extremely dark and low contrast headstock to set off the gold hardware and silver logo.

If this is getting off-topic for this location, we can take it off-line or start the FTC thread, whatever is most convenient for you.
