Schedua has a cold, greenish cast to the wood. This piece has some gentle large flames, hard to see in the rough.

How much do you use Schedua? My '78 Series I is Schedua and is the only instrument made of that wood I have seen. It has some really nice flame or quilt or some such that would very beautiful with a refinish (it's horribly cracked, with spots missing, etc, but that's part of the charm of an old bass, I suppose!). I love the look and it doesn't seem cold at all!

Thanks,
Edwin

I had a 77 Series I with a schedua top (SN 77-744) for a few months a couple of years ago. Although the top was gorgeous, I never could get into the bass's dark tone, which was a primarily a function of the cherry core. Each to their own...

You can see a picture of a bass with a schedua top similar to the one I owned here:

Thanks Michael; I didn't make the connection when I first saw it. The pics in the Progress thread look even better.

It was pretty common in the mid and late seventies to find Schedua tops and backs. We don't use Schedua much at all these days except for some special models for Japan.

The wood on Chris' bass is called "beewing" figure. It's hard to find these days.

Hey Mica.
Is there an upcharge for a schedua top?
Schedua doesn't come up in the custom qoute generator.
I'm starting to get some new ideas for my next custom.
Thanks.

The schedua pictured is not an additional charge. We don't use it very much on new builds, so I can understand that you're attracted to it for your next custom project.

Rarely I can find pieces like the link above on Chris' bass. It's called "bee wing figure" and it's usually expensive.
