Greetings all. First time here. Spend most of my time on TalkBass.

I got these to put in one of my fretless basses.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Model # and age.
Sound comparisons. Is one set better for fretless?
Will I be able to send in the harness to be upgraded/completed?

Thanks !!

The one I've labelled as AXY is most likely just that. It will have the same sound as the MXY pickups. The JZ ha a narrower aperture, and while it's manufactured in the same manner as the other two, it will have a somewhat thinner sound.

Placement of any of these pickups will be a huge determining factor on the tone - closer to the bridge and the sound will be more treble-ly, closer to the fingerboard, and the the tone is more bass-y.

The harness was made in 1988 and looks complete (well I can't see the battery clip or output jack). You can hook up a battery and plug any of the pickups in to make a general test to see if things are working at all.

We no longer make this two-volume setup, so if either of the volume pots need replacing, we would recommend changing to a volume/pan harness. This will also be less noisy at low volume settings that what you have there.

Thanks SO much for responding. Everything you said is very clear. I do have the battery clip. Does it connect to the red 2 prong terminal as I have it laid out in this next pic?

However, I do not have a jack. What type of jack and do the three wires here connect to it? They are black, purple and red/white.

Thanks tons.

Hi Mica,

What is in this last picture is all I have.

I have seen a few pictures and it appears that the battery clip connects to the jack ??

I would like to buy the jack and whatever else I need to make this work. I can solder/connect the 3 wires.

I am now assuming that the other 2 prong terminal on the filter may be for a Q switch. Is this the case?

So, can I buy what is needed to complete this system? Cost?

In addition, can I add a Q filter and what is the cost?

How to proceed with contact and payment?

Thanks again !!

You know, looking at this again, I think you might need to send it in here for servicing. There should be a grey shielded wire between the volume harness with the cut wires to the 2-prong connector on the filter module.

The battery clip is MUCH newer than the rest and doesn't plug in to the connector you have it next to. On this system, the battery clip would have been hardwired to the volume harness and output jack. The jack is a Switchcraft L113 and not a standard jack (it need to turn the battery on).

connection

There's no charge to test, and if everything works out OK on this system otherwise, the jack is $12, the labor will fall in the $35 minimum bench charge.

If you want to send this in to me, just email me (in my profile) with:
1. your name and return shipping address
2. phone number(s) / email to contact you
3. the amount you want us to insure the parcel for when we send it back to you

I'll let you know when we get it.
