Received my copy of "Bass Culture: The John Entwistle Guitar Collection" from amazon.com on Saturday. BEAUTIFUL book, and there's a nice section on Alembics. Some absolutely stunning photographs of both basses and guitars. Even the Teisco Del Ray and National guitars look good. Highly recommended.

It's a wonderful combination of gorgeous photography of absolutely beautiful guitars, mixed with Entwistle's wry, dry, acerbic sense of humor. His collection was stunning. I have the Sotheby's catalog, but this book really does it one better. I'd never seen an Alembic with a Precision Bass body. Make sure to either wear a bib or have a napkin nearby, because you'll be drooling.

OK, here's a real stupid question: Where's the best place to buy the book from? That is to say, who's got it the cheapest? Inquiring (and stingy) minds wanna know, LOL!

Kevin,
best is going to google and search for the title:
BASS CULTURE:THE JOHN ENTWISTLE GUITAR COLLECTION
Curious that Amazon Germany is still listing it as not published yet while others (Amazon.com) is speaking about an immediate delivery. I got mine after hard search from a bookshop in Ireland.
As said it is really worth the money and a phantastic coffeetable book.
BTW you also can see one of my basses in it
(previously owned by John)..... :-)

Oliver,

Danke Shoene! I picked it up at Amazon.com for $27.19USD, No Tax, S&H included. I can't wait until it arrives!

I've been enthralled by John's massive collection ever since I saw "The Kids Are Alright" back when it first came out. Those scenes from the "Success Story" video vignette with all his collection on (staged) display allways blew me away. Having owned the original movie on Laserdisc, I was amazed at how good the new DVD restoration is. You can clearly see all the guitars! I've been a Who fan since my very early teens.

Cheers,

Kevin

Oliver that's pretty cool that you own a bass pictured in this book. What page is it on and are you credited as the current owner? That's got to be exciting for you.

Sam,
no I am not mentioned (of course) as the original research and photographing for the book was done in the mid ninetees.
It is the blonde Ovation Elite acoustic bass on page 236; the small picture beside the bigger black one. This was sold last year at the Sotheby´s auction and the buyer had to sell it now due to financial problems. It is untouched since then and has Johns original Maxima Gold strings on it as well all tags and the complete paperwork from Sothebys.
OK, no Alembic Spyder, but a first step.... :-)

Oliver,

I have no doubt in my mind that you will not rest until you own at least one of Thunderfinger's original Spyders. Happy Hunting!

Rick Neilsen of Cheap Trick (local Illinois boys)is a HUGE vintage guitar collector. I don't know how good of a photographer he is, but, nonetheless...

Oliver:

I just got my book today...you were absolutely on the money (stimpt gennau, LOL!)...the book is awesome. It's a shame they had to break that collection up. While reading the captions, it felt as if JAE is still with us...it's very very sad that he is not. BTW, that Ovation bass of yours (er, John's, LOL!) is very nice.

Kevin,
great you have your copy. Yes the book is really great. But, there had been many many other basses which had been in Johns collection which are not in and were sold by John over the years....

Just got my copy today. What a fun book! Tasty photos of beautiful axes and witty commentary by JE. I'm sure I'll be reading and rereading it many times.

Oliver:

A question about the jeweled spider on the book's cover (I forget what John called it in the book)....Did they sell that at Sotheby's as well?

Kevin,
the Spider on the front book was sold last year at the Sothebys auction as well as his more famous and bigger black Spider pendant. Also there had been a similar one auctioned at Sothebys on Septermber 12th 1988.
This are the prices they went for:
Big black one, auctioned in 1988,
currently in Hard Rock Cafe posession GBP 2200

Big black one, inside cover of the book, auctioned last year at Sotheby´s,
whereabouts unknown to me GBP 1200

Gold-green one, front cover, smaller,
auctioned last year at Sotheby´s,
whereabouts unknown to me GBP 3360

All the Spider were made by London jeweller
Michael Fishberg.

Oliver:

Danke Shoene! I knew that if anyone had the answer as to the dispensation of the bejeweled spider(s), or anything even remotely OX-related, it would be you. You are the man! Roger/Pete always said that John was completeley caught up in the excesses and trappings of the life of a famous rockstar. This is precisely why John's life is so interesting to me (as well as others). I understand that John's colorful excesses are the basis for the "new" Who tune "old red wine" (at least I think it's called that).

Oliver,

Yeah I saw your bass in there. Very cool.

Now I'd like to get my hands on one of those Spider pendants. Not one of John's, of course (hey! I just bought a Spyder bass! I'm not made of money!) but a replica. Thanks Ollie for posting the name of the jeweller. Any idea how I can get one? Mike

Mike,
I am currently researching to find the jeweller as he is not listed in London anymore but I will find out. Send me a mail when you have time....
