Hello,
Im new to this forum and a bass player of only about six months now.
My friend recently aquired a Tom Gardiner custom alembic for a house he painted. He wants to sell it to me now.
Could anyone tell me anything about this bass? I know alembics are amazing, I just cant find any info on a Tom Gardiner. He only wants $800 USD for it and I assume that's a steal.

Hi; welcome to the group. I don't recall hearing that name before. Can you take some pictures and post them here so we can get an idea of the bass you are looking at?

I believe what your friend means is that he acquired an Alembic custom bass made for Mr. Gardiner, who, as far as Mica remembers, is one of our customers like most of the club members here. If you can get a serial number I can look up the specs on that instrument and see what it is.

sorry I haven't been able to get access to my digi camera to post some pics. The serial is on the fretboard and worn and I can barely make it out. I believe it is:

80 1633x USA
the x is a number I cant quite make out.

Could you please give me some info on this?
Thanks

You shouldn't have another number on a 1980 bass. Serial numbers weren't that high at that point in time. In fact, I think we're only in the 13000 range right now. 1633 sounds like a number that would have been right around 1980.
