After settling in with my new Excel, I am still wondering about one small detail. The perceived bass and treble boost is fairly substantial, as is the bass cut when adjusting the bass and treble controls. The treble cut, however, seems fairly minor. It is discernible, but not as dramatic as the other adjustments. Does this sound fairly normal or does anybody have any feedback on the amount of typical treble cut? It certainly does not cut as much as a typical P-Bass or something similar... Any and all feedback greatly appreciated!

A P-bass tone control rolls-off a larger swath of the spectrum than the treble control on your Alembic. The treble control's effectiveness will likely be far more apparent if you are using roundwound strings, which I suspect you are not. ;)

Hope this helps.

I think there's a market for a single-knob passive tone control widget for use between the active bass and the preamp, because for some sounds there really is no easy substitute for that.

Thanks, John

Actually, I am using Hi-Beam rounds right now, and although I can hear a slight difference, it is not nearly as dramatic as the treble roll-off on my only other active bass, which has a 2-band Bartolini pre and is strung Hi-Beams as well. I guess maybe it is just the inherent difference in the two preamps and their respective roll-off frequencies...Is the Alembic pre known for having a subtle roll-off compared to other preamps?

On a recent thread, I referred to the FAQ on the controls for Epic, Excel & Orion Basses.

The Alembic 2-band does +6/-15 dB @ 5 kHz. Difficult to find the specs for a 2 band Bartolini - for a 3 band, it appears to be +/-16 dB @ 10 kHz.
