For some, possibly. For me, it sucks. I had three chances to get one of the two specials I was waiting for, neither of which came up in 2004. I now have two chances, if those specials are even still in the pool and if management doesn't decide that they shouldn't come up. I think this would have been a great special to have in January '05 so that anyone waiting and betting on a good special the last two months of the year would have three days or so to pick a recent one and go with it before the increase and not get totally screwed. If they did it then, I would applaud and make the best of what was available before it was too late. Coming now, and after I posted what I was waiting for, it's more like a slap in the face. Hey, you just can't please everybody. I'll take this discussion off-line and see what my chances are and go from there. |

Personally, I have my fingers crossed for that HOMERUN 20% off of base MSRP Special O' Month. That bad boy made "Ke(vi)n's Custom Orion" an affordable reality for me, and I hope it does the same for my next Custom...especially in light of the substantial price increase. |

Sorry, Jeff. I didn't mean to turn this into a price increase thread on you. I was just pointing out the reality that anyone seriously thinking about an Alembic right now is going to order by 1/4/05. As such, there is a certain criticality to the November, December and January specials. This special provides incentive for the sane buyer to place that order this month and not risk the other two specials being weaker than what is available now. To put it in real terms, the difference between the best of this month's specials and the ones I am waiting for could be anything from $500-1200 at list price and will influence the specs of the bass I order. So bsee, do you think you're entitled to that 50% off any custom +20% deal? No one's getting a slap in the face or screwed, if you can't afford the instument you want, don't buy it. I sure can't afford the custom I want and will probably be into the next price increase before I can. I just view the special as a present, gift, incentive, whatever you want to call it, not an entitlement. Some of them have been pretty amazing specials, and I think their randomness only contributes to the mystique and coolness of Alembic and staff. What other company would draw out of a hat like that? I think it's a cool way to do it and if I don't get the special I want, it's only the luck of the draw. |

you should have bet on the red sox bsee,,, 0ne more thing. if one looks at only the cost,,, thats a big mistake,. think about how good its gonna sound, how good its gonna look and how much extra the cost is over say 5 years. and there are always used basses around. for me it was a no brainer, even at what i "overpaid", hell i play in my closet. |

Jeff, I don't disagree there at all. I seriously thought the chance of the special I was looking for coming up between July '04 and February '05 was a lot better than the chance of a Red Sox World Series win, but I've been wrong before. I say February '05, because I was hoping to take delivery of a new instrument by the end of May '05 even before the pricing announcement. Unfortunately, the analysis of purchases with an intent to get the best deal possible is genetic for me. I know it goes back at least three generations, and probably to the dawn of time. One more thing on the Sox... Though I now live in Red Sox country, I was born and raised in the shadow of Yankee Stadium. The poor luck the Sox have had over the years has made them a team that almost demands that anyone around here root for them. Kind of like the underdog thing. I suspect that this year's win will remove that mystique, and that if I moved here now instead of 20 years ago that I might not be as drawn to the Sox. |

I hear ya Bob. I'm a cheap b*stard first class myself. I'm waiting for that killer special so I can: a) get the best deal possible, or; b) add more options for the same price, or; c) all of the above. I don't think that there's anything wrong with that. Being cheap is the American way of life, LOL! Cheers, The Resident Alembic Club Site Cheapskate (Kevin). |

Bob: Which side of the Stadium? My Dad's office was literally catacorner across the street from the Stadium on the NE side, just on the other side of the "EL" Woodlawn/Jerome #4 Line, by McCoombs Park, I believe it was called. The Sox only won because the Babe was too busy welcoming the late great Robert Merrill. (For those scratching their heads, Merrill was the great baritone of the Metropolitian Opera in NYC who also sang the Star Spangled Banner at Yankee Stadium for some 30 years). He died on Saturday, September 23, while watching the World Series. I, too was a Yankee fan my whole life. I moved to Californina in '73 and to the Bay Area in '78. After 26 years I am now a full blown A's fan, but it took some time. But if the A's are out of it? Go Yankees! As for the Red Sox - "86 more years, 86 more years" Bill, tgo |

bsee- look at it this way- ya only have to have about half the cost at order and the other half comes from uncle sams tax returns. me, i had to come up with close to 70% because i had to pay for my inlays in full |
