Ok here is where my head is at the moment. Since I got my series II bass earlier this year I've been so impressed with the sound of it. I'm regularly battling with the thought of whether I should sell my non series basses, exluding my SC Deluxe to fund the purchase of a Series I or II Bass. To make things worse I've already seen a lovely 5 string Series I europa bass on-line here in Europe that I like but think is a bit on the dear side. I've read hear many disappointed members who have sold alembic's and harbour the dream of getting their old bass back and I've not sold any of my decent older instruments for partly that reason, so selling would be a hard choice to make. However on the other side the more I have the less time I have to play each of them regularly and since I don't gig as often these days it may be good to have less and get to play them more. It's a hard call. Any views? Jazzyvee |

I'm going through that very process now, except that it's a Series I I'm selling. I think I'm going to go through with it, but I know I'm going to miss it for the rest of my life. However, I'm doing it with the faith that the really right bass for me will show up. In other words, eventually you will sell me your SII! |

I've watched your videos on the youtube. I think you're too good a bassist to be worrying about gear so much. |

Edwin, what series I are you selling? Daniel, thanks I appreciate your comments, though "good bassist" is not something I recognise in myself yet. As for the gear, I don't like waste so having gear that is not getting used as much as it should be torments me...... up to a point. :-) jazzyvee |

Hm, I got one email and sent a reply. My email has been screwy. It probably went out via the wrong address and got blocked. It's been doing that a lot. Anyway, yes. This lovely jewel will be leaving me. It really feels like one of the great ones. Sadly, it's going mostly to cover debt incurred while distracted from life by my lovely son's arrival and subsequent medical adventures. However, I hope to scrounge together enough scratch to find the right medium scale Series bass to replace it at some point. My Starfire will have to suffice. At least with SII controls, it feels like I'm still in the family. |

Its a tough call for sure. I have regretted selling every Alembic I have let go, but an upgrade is an upgrade... the safest option would be to hold onto your basses, and just start saving from scratch for another Series. There are over a dozen beautiful instruments I have sold, all of which still haunt me in my dreams... |

My 5 cents is that if you truly loved your Alembic(s) at purchase, you will regret selling it, even if just for sentimental reasons. For practical purposes, that may be unavoidable, until such time that technology will allow for a signature or anniversay bass to be converted to Series status. I have been fortunate (and lucky) and not had to sell one Alembic to buy another, but ultimately, if you really need to upgrade, then you must do what you must. Good luck whichever direction you decide to take. |
