You guys are going to get a kick out of this; it's a traditional style, with a difference! Oh, and an amazing quilt as well. Congrats Gary! |

I first saw a portion of this instrument featured in an Alembic ad in Vintage Guitar (April?) and it became the inspiration for one of my projects. Prior to seeing this ad, I mistakenly thought that Alembic was out of business. Moral: GOOD advertising works on many levels...

Pretty bass, very clean look, and I am sure lots of brightness in tone to help cut through the mix. Maple fingerboards do have a different feel than Ebony, Rosewood, etc. Please offer audio samples of the tone. Enjoy this work of art! |

Good grief, the thought of Alembic being out of business. If you want to kill me with that thought, at least I am in the the hospital to deal with that stress |

Re: "out of business" - Imagine MY relief when I saw the ad and discovered that they are not only still in business, but functioning at the top of their game! Proof is in the ad and the spectacular/inspirational bass featured in it and the website and this forum and the customer service and... |

I think VINTAGE GUITAR is exactly right as an advertising venue for Alembic. My usual response I hear when I bring up Alembic in conversation with other guys is, 'they're still around? ', so I hope they can stick with it. J o e y |

It would be nice to see an ad in Bass player now and again. Show those Warwick, Fodera and Fender players what they're missing :-) Graeme |

Yeah it would be nice especially if the reviewer could move past the tired debate about their price and look at their true value as musical instruments with high end build qualities. |

I find it interesting that there is so much debate over whether high end basses and guitars are worth the money one shells out for them, but that this issue doesn't seem to present itself nearly as much when one is talking about other string instruments (how much does a new Steinway concert grand cost today)? Or maybe there are people out there constantly debating whether high end violins, cellos, and brass instruments are worth what one pays and I'm just not aware of it. |

Re: "worth the price". I look at it this way: for the prices that Alembic charges, where else can you go to commission a one-of-a-kind, functional work of art based on a thoroughly original (and now classic) design concept? Before you answer that question, go to other instrument maker's websites and check their prices vs. what you get for your $$. Those that do offer a 100% custom service are priced at (or above) Alembic for products with material, construction and electronic specifications that vary (in some cases greatly) from what Alembic offers. When you take delivery of an instrument that Alembic has crafted for you, you know that it is "one of one" - a unique, personal visual and sonic statement that is the result of a one-time collaboration between you and a group of visionaries, artists and craftspeople dedicated for over 40 years to absolute perfection and customer satisfaction. It is unfortunate that we have to put a price on something like that, but since we do, I feel the price is reasonable. |

Alembics are the modern analogue to Stradivari, Guarneri and Amati stringed instruments and equivalent to Bosendorfer or Steinway pianos. Only a poltroon would complain about whay they cost. True art is never, ever inexpensive. Some people's kids... |
