Just finished watching Charles playing the Dragonfly on his latest post. Great stuff. With that in mind, I wanted to take a moment to thank those of you who have, and continue to post audio and video of your Alembics. Some of us are hobbyists like myself ( life, family, and work don't allow for more),while others are full timers (and everything in between). Seeing these wonderful instruments is one thing, but hearing them is the best. The nature of wood being what it is, no two are alike. It would be nice to see more vids in the showcase. I won't bowl anyone over with my playing, but the family here is aways encouraging, and never judgmental of each others abilities. If anyone out there is being shy, don't be. Post yourself playing if you haven't already! We'll be your biggest fans!

That "Vulcan Worlds" track was from Bass Day (1998?) featuring Victor Wooten and his brother. I just happened to come across it last week while surfing you.tube
Nice playing by the way!!!

I have four tracks up on Fandalism. The first 3 feature my Alembic MK Sig Dlx 5. Track 4 is with a now-sold Spector 5.

Hey Sam, that track called GOM JABBAR, I'm sure you played that bass line on my bass at the California Alembic Meet this year. It's stuck in my mind. I love that bass line man.

Oh, Wow, Jazzyvee! GOM JABBAR was part of my medley at the last gathering, though I don't think its on the actual video...Thanks for the kind words! And yes, your bass is totally sublime in form, function, looks and sound....And so are you and your playing!

Hey, Graeme! Just the first book. Intriguing concepts. I really looked forward to the movie but somehow it didn't do it for me.

I was a fan of both the Beserker and Foundation series, Macroscope, Cities in Flight, Startide Rising, etc. I always liked the concept of a Seldon Crisis. I don't read much sci-fi any more but I still like sci-fi movies.

You?

I thought the movie of Dune was almost rubbish. They changed too many of the book's concepts for my liking. Read all the dune books that Frank Herbert wrote but I have to say the last three were a chore. I have no interest in reading any of the prequels or sequels his son wrote. I don't read a huge amount of sci-fi nowadays - I prefer fantasy such as Terry brooks Shannara and word & void series', Anne McCaffereys Pern books or Stephen Donaldson's Thomas covenant books. Still watch loads of scifi movies though (when I'm allowed access to the TV that is ).

Loved Dune, the novel, (it's been a LONG time). You guys are making me think about reading "Stranger in a Strange Land" again, 35 year later.

The two Dune mini-series done by John Harrison and the scifi channel were much better than the Dino de Horrendus version. Worth checking out on DVD.

For me, the best part of Dune the movie was "Take My Hand" by Toto. Beautiful piece of music.

But it had Sting in a diaper! Read the first 3 Dune books back when that's all there were; loved them enough I never saw a need to read the later ones. Movie sucked. Read the 1st & 2nd Thomas Covenant series then, too - that probably would stand revisiting. More recently I've been recommending Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series; literary-based alternate-history/fantasy.

Of course Adriaan is right; both words apply fully. And the link reminded me that Fforde wrote Shades of Grey as well; equally highly endorsed.

Cool stuff everyone!

Here's a recording of my new band - I've been using my new (to me) Fender Duck Dunn Signature Bass - the AlFemBic is strung with rounds, I got the Dunn Sig so I can have a bass to string with flats (GHS). It has an Alembic connection though - bass is going through my F-2B!
