The noise upgrade is for getting rid of more recent types of RF interference (wireless and mobile devices, flatscreens) than what the system was designed to suppress. I bet somebody has tinkered around with the electronics..didn't put them back correctly. My Distilliate's filters next to the Q switch don't seem to do much when tested against single notes, either. But..you sure notice the effect when playing to music.
