Has anyone tried putting a convention together for owners and potential owners of Alembic Legends? |

That's been discussed, talked about, and then discussed some more. Europe has been mentioned as a location. Both the east and west coasts of the US have been nominated. It was even suggested that Europe and the US alternate years. Most everyone seemed open to the idea it's just putting something together for real is the challange. Alembic doesn't have the staff or time to organize anything on this scale. Individual club members are also pretty much tied up with personal lives and business. It seems that since the Alembic Club is not really a club with any kind of structure the logistics get kind of muddy. With no dues there's no treasury funds to hire an organizer or guarantee a block of hotel rooms. Sorry to be so wordy but all that to say, yeah it's been thought of but no, it hasn't been tried. To quote an old movie "If you build it, they'll come" Sam

Hi Sam (bracheen), Thanks for the feedback. Maybe we could start small and chapters around the world can follow. I am going to try and start with one right here in Sacramento. I love that expression from Field of Dreams. Another one more relative to the industry is...all majors were once minors. Darrell |

I'd try to start a Club here in Fayetteville, NC, but I think I'd probably be the only member! I know of only one other guy in the local area that owns an Alembic. Everyone else owns Ibanez, Fender, and other mass produced makes. Alan |

I bought an Alembic thinking everyone should have one. But rare indeed is the breed. Thanks for the support, maybe you can put a small one together in VA. I'm planning a small one for springtime here in Sacramento with those who have made contact with me. |

Hey all you Sacto denizens. Anyone want to come down to the World Guitar Show (& basses too!) this weekend at the Marin County Civic Center (only about 1.5 hours from Sacto)? If people are interested, perhaps we could meet at a predesignated time and place (like maybe noon at the front door) and all go to lunch together? I have been to these shows (2x a year) for the past few years and have always got my ten bucks worth (the admission fee). There are hundreds of guitars, basses, and other instruments, and usually an Alembic bass or two. Last summer's show had two Alembic guitars, the Electrum I bought, and an old Series 1. I have also picked up several other insruments over the years at pretty good prices. I would suggest bringing any guitar/bass reference and/or price guide books you may have, just in case. I leave mine in the car so that if I see an instrument I have a question about, I can look it up and get an idea of value. You can also sell and trade instruments. Big fun. Anyone interested? Here is a link for more info, (I previously posted this link in the Miscellaneous section, but I thought it fit in with the direction this thread has taken). http://www.texasguitarshows.com Bill, tgo |

Thanks dragonslayer, You can be the VA chapter for Alembic Owner's. We all have to start somewhere. I think it's long overdue to have an Alembic get together, even if it means at different locations, and have our Alembics meet there distant cousins. Let's keep in touch, Darrell

There appears not to have been an overwhelming response to setting up a meet/lunch. If anyone does go to the show and sees a guy about 6'2" with graying hair in a ponytail and an Alembic sweatshirt on, it's probably me. Come up and say hi. I'll probably be there on Saturday morning and maybe again on Sunday for the last hour or so (3-4). Bill, tgo |

Sam, Pass on some important advice to your friend's daughter. I don't know what her age is, but if she is at least a teenager on up, please make sure she is with someone who knows the island very well, no exceptions!!! I love my people, but there are some locals that will take advantage of mainlanders. Also, the locals are referred to as either Guamanians or Chamorros. Here are a couple of nice to know phrases to pass on to your friend's daughter: Hafa Adai (Hoffa-day) = Hello, how are you Todo Mauleg (taw-doo-mall-egg) = I'm doing fine Si Yuus Maase (See-zoo-oos-ma-see) = Thank You That will make breaking the ice a lot easier. Wow, I suspect that would greatly increase the draw of such a get-together. This doesn't sound like half a dozen guys meeting up in someone's basement anymore. Sounds like it could be turning into a real production. If so, you better get a planning team in the works now if you're going to do this so you can work with Stanley on his schedule, see how many would be interested in travelling in, and identify the right size of venue for the meet. |

Great! sounds good, this could possibly be an annual event for bassplayers in general, but it would be sponcered by "club alembic",also it can be to promote alembic's latest gear, basses, t-shirts coffee mugs etc... or what ever. and what will be a big draw is the appearence of some big name bassplayers and demonstrations of alembics latest stuff,Hey i think were on somethin!!! |

If you really want this to work out, you know, planned well, all the logistics considered and addressed in advance, etc., you are undoubtedly going to have to get some guitar players involved. LOL Bill, tgo P.S. If you are considering the Bay Area for such a gathering, the city of Oakland has some very nice facilities that they rent out VERY inexpensively. My wife and I rented one for our wedding three years ago - a beautiful wooden lodge at the base of the Oakland Hills - holds about 125 as I recall. Big fireplace, big well equipped kitchen, set amongst trees and woods, good parking, all this for only $75 an hour! ($65 an hour for Oakland residents). |

I wouldn't doubt Stanley's willingness to attend, but until you work out the schedule it's far from a guarantee. He's got to be a busy man with appearances, so I don't think you can make that categoric a statement until he responds with a yes for a given date and location. I hope it works out, and I hope I can be there, but there's a lot of ground to cover first. |

I agree with Bill, an Alembic gathering should be bassists, guitarests, and even pre ampists. I know guys who play others' instruments but swear by Alembic's rack equipment. Never been to Oakland but I love the Bay area in general and any town with a Gerry Adams Street can't be all bad. Darrell, I'm impressed. You have certainly stirred up some enthusiasm. Well done! I can't wait to see a date. Maybe I can work that trip out after all. Sam

Hey Dragonslayer, I live in VA (Winchester) and own 2 Alembics, a 6 string Essence and a 4 string fretless Orion. I would love to meet up, as there is no one in this area that has even heard of them let alone actually owning one. Its a Fender / Ibanez crowd for sure. I've met another Alembic owner at a Guitar Center in Fairfax, but it was months ago and I don't recall his name. He was showing folks a 4 string Tribute Spider bass, but recall him mentioning owning others. Could that have been you? In any case, say the word and I am there. ~Pete |

Yeah, maybe we could. I wouldn't mind hearing what some other Alembics sound like. I love my Epic but it would be cool to hear the filters and Qs. I would travel a little ways to get together. Up here in the boonies you have to travel to do just about anything (except be in the mountains). If there is anyone in the area we could get a thread going and discuss it. Rich |

Yo, JLPICARD. I just saw a post on another thread where you mentioned that you live and gig in SLC. I will be in SLC on spring break on about March 13-15 or 16. I'd like to hit a guitar store while I'm out there. Any suggestions? We'll be mainly staying downtown. If you're gigging around there Sun-Mon-Tues PM maybe I could show up. Hi Rich, I do indeed live in SLC. Unfortunately most of the cool local shops were forced out when the Mars/Guitar Center pestilence swept throught the town. There is one cool shop remaining, in fact thriving called Guitar Czar on 33rd south and about 30th east. Eric the owner is about as great a guy as you'll ever find behind the counter in a music store. He has a good selection of pro gear, a knowledgable staff ( unlike most Guitar Centers) great prices, and even does excellent setup and repair work. Let me know when your coming and I'll set up a meeting /jam session if you like with the three other Alembic players in this area that I know of. one of them happens to be the local Alembic dealer Tom Gardiner. Between the four of us there are about ten different Alembics that you can check out! Mike |

But Mike you forgot to mention that 2/3 of the alembic basses in slc are left handed 8^). Although I must add that playing one of Mike's Alembics, even upside down, convinced me that Alembic was the bass for me. Guitar Czar is certainly worth a stop, although last time I was in there the only higher end basses were a couple of Gibson Tobias models. dave |

Mike/Dave. Thanks for the input. I don't have a real schedule for mid March yet. When I do I'll get back on here and see what we can do. I'm always up for a jam session. We'll see what the family can work in. Dropping the wife and boys off somewhere would not be a good move, though. As far as Guitar Czar goes, what I'm looking for is pretty basic so any good shop will do. I'd like to say that I want to walk out of there with an Alembic but I don't see that happening this trip. I agree about Guitar Center. It works most of the time if I know what I want and know that they have it (I call first). I think they have an entirely new staff every time I'm there. I hope this SLC trip will work out. I'm getting pretty jealous reading about this NoCal/MidCal thing that seems to be coming together. Thanks, again. Rich |
