I can't remember from where I last ordered the TI flats that I typically use on my basses and was wondering where people have found them at the most reasonable price. I know the last time I purchased a couple of sets i was amazed at the price differences that existed between various places. In addition, I just acquired a beautiful signature short scale and was wondering, given the Alembic build, whether I'll need short or medium scale strings for it. | ||

I personally use long-scale strings on my short scale Stanley - short scale will usually be too short, because of the difference between the bridge and tailpiece. There was a thread on this recently, will try and find it. | ||

Medium scale might be ideal but you may or not be able to find them. Hopefully someone that uses TI Jazz Flats on a short scale will chime in! | ||

Also you might try the D'Addario Chromes in their medium scale. Flax had us put them on his Dire Wolf bass and they were pretty cool! They are a little higher tension than the TI Jazz Flats and a good bit less expensive. I think Just Strings has them too. | ||

I've swapped from DR roundwouds to D'addario Chromes on my fretless rogue and they feel and sound superb. Harry has the same on his fretted Stanley clarke and that felt great when I played it at Bill's last september. Graeme (Message edited by jacko on March 28, 2013) | ||

I'm considering putting some flats on my Europa/Elan to get a more mellowed out tone for reggae so I'll be following this thread. Since the bass is black I was thinking of checking out some black coated strings or some others 've seen on line that are nylon coated strings. Anyone tried these? Jazzyvee | ||

Just put Chromes on my new Univox short scale and a Kubicki Ex Factor (RIP Phil) that I refurbished for a customer, and was sufficiently impressed that I think they'll be going on at least one and possibly both of my Rogues. | ||

Oh, and to your question Jazzy, I had tapewounds on my fretless Rogue for a bit but they had too much midrange honk on that bass. They work pretty well on my defretted Fernandes with EMG PJs though. | ||

I'll be trying the Chromes soon. Just got a set and trying to decide which bass to use a guinea pig. My SCSD may be a good candidate... I know it's not typical, but has anyone tried them on a Rick? | ||

Thanks for the input. I've ordered sets of both the TI flats and Chromes just in case I'm not taken by the latter. Now to decide on which bass to put which strings for the test? | ||

Yep, I was the one who started that thread Harry spoke of. And I ended up with the D'Addario Chromes in their medium scale. The "Shorts" had the taper fall on the fret board end of the nut and I found the Longs had too much of the string wrapped on the tuning peg stressing the core. The porridge was just right with the Mediums. Good Luck Pete | ||

Just a note on the Chromes. It took a couple of weeks on my fretless for them to settle in. Initially they were quite bright and seemed to lack fullness to me. Once they were broken in the fullness was there and has been since (I've not changed them since getting the bass). Keith | ||

I've been using Chrome flats since 2007. They were on the fretless bass I used at the Scottish Reunion with Jacko. I think they are the bizz...especially for the price. | ||

In fact, D'Addario is the only string I use! Fretless....Chromes.. 40-95 Fretted Prosteels.....35-95 Superb tone and durability.......oh...and price, which, for a Scotsman is a crucial factor LOL G | ||

I'm a long time TI (& Pyramid) Short scale flats fan. They sound awesome on my Guild Strafire. On my shortscale Alembic, I found that the Chromes are a lot better. | ||

I ordered some TI flats for my medium scale Signature and Chromes for the short scale. Hopefully they will be here soon. I'd like to try the Chromes out given the significant difference in price. I do find, however, that a lot of strings just give me too bright a sound for the types of music I prefer to play. Playing with pick 60-70% of the time just seems to accentuate the brightness. | ||

Brian, The Chromes have a bit of *zing* fresh out of the box, but settle in really nicely after about a week or so. Keep that in mind when you put them for the first time. | ||
