I currently own an Essence-4. I'm looking at getting a 3/4 body/head sized Mark King standard. Both basses share a lot of the same design features: 3 pc neck with walnut laminates, exoctic top with mahogany back, body size, etc.

Is it worth it to upgrade from an Essence to a 3/4 Mark King? Is there enough difference/improvements to justify the extra cash? If not, what bass would justify the upgrade? Perhaps a Stanley Clarke?

Hi James,
Guess this is purely a matter of taste. I own an Essence but had it custom made with the Signature Electronics (like the MK & SC) I really got used to the Essence shape because I bought one "off the rack" then decided to step up the electronics. I did the same with my Spoiler ('94) I had Alembic put in the Signature electronics and side LED's. After getting my Essence the I came to the conclusion that the Spoiler body was too bulky for me (which is why it's for sale**see swap page ;^) Anyway, your Essence is a beautiful instrument but there's no doubt that the electronics in the MK are much higher end and will give you more versitility.
