MXY pup problem

Did Alembic change the size of MXY (4string) pups at anytime during their production?!? The reason I am asking is because I just traded a set out of a 1990 Essence to another forum member whom also owns a 1990 Essence~ according to him the screw holes do not line up. I believe AXY is the size used in Series instruments, and Fatboy pickups are made from the same mold. Perhaps one of these instruments had one, and the other had the alternate?
