Some of us may remember the Japanese site with lots of Alembics. From time to time I check out the site, and I can't remember seeing this particular guitar there earlier. I can't read Japanese, but it appears to be one of the Japanese-built instruments that were licensed to carry the Alembic name - I believe because of some legal issues on maintaining the trademark - it's the second item on this page:
http://www8.plala.or.jp/alembic/gallery_syoutai.html - again, it's not the real thing but it has some very nice carving and other bits of niceties.

Ah yes, the fourth item on this page is actually a bass version - same body shape:
http://www8.plala.or.jp/alembic/gallery_cho_taro.html - but it's not for the faint of heart, as it's a semi-headless bolt-on.

Adriaan,

tese basses were custom made a long time ago, there is an earlier thread about these instruments somewhere.

I forgot all about the national sport of Japan, "May pulling" - gna gna, that's just the English phonetic approximation of the Japanese phonetic approximation of "maple".

Don't know about you fellas, but I have a terrible time understanding all the details about these Japanese Alembics! You could say that when I read the descriptions that they are all Greek to me but that isn't really true, is it?????

Ha ha,
The translation is so funny.
Maybe, anybody can't understand these translating descriptions. (I can't understand it !)

I am the member of this Japanese site.
These description has many slang and colloquialism.
I don't know the Japanese translator that is equal to use.
If you want to know, you must have a good Japanese friend.

Well, these guitar and bass were made by Japanese luthier, produced by "Rokkomann" (the distributor on middle 80's to 90's), under licensed by ALEMBIC.
These were made with "Activator".
Yes, These were Japanese body with ALEMBIC circuit and logomark.

Hi Dave,
You are welcome to ask about our site "ALEMBIC FAN CLUB".

Additional info:
The guitar of ALEMBIC-Japan is prototype, that I think.
Our member had never seen another guitar.
And also the bass were made only a few numbers. (Maybe 20 to 30)
The most famous Alembic model is Distillate bass in Japan, still now.

Eiji,

I am now living in Kyoto (when I'm not in Austin, TX) and I've been trying to find a Japan Alembic bass. You say there are only about 20-30 of them. Now, I know why I'm having trouble. Do you know where I can SEE one?
