Epic 5 or Excel 4

I don't have an Alembic yet, but I've got a choice right now between an Epic 5 and an Excel 4. The Excel is a 2004, with only one fatboy pickup. Both have the bass and treble tone controls so from that perspective only they are similar to use. I guess it also depends on whether you are a 4 or 5 string bass player too. These days I play more 5 string that 4 string so that would push me towards the 5 string Epic bass. Both basses will give you a great but different Alembic sound. Having the two pickups plus a pan control will also give you more options with tone than a single pickup will. Do you have the opportunity to try any before you buy? I'm sure you will get other views of which to choose.
