I've got a chance to pick up a 1988 Persuader. It is in rough shape cosmetically but can be cleaned up. The asking price is $850.00. How does this sound to you all?

What do you mean by "rough shape"?

Finish cracked on the top and worn to bare wood in the typical places. Ebony fingerboard discolored. Missing strap buttons. Two of the tuners replaced with Japanese versions. Volume and tone controls will probably have to be replaced as they are internally loose and a bit noisy. Definitely a working bass.

I agree. These seem to be pretty superficial and easy to repair/refinish.

I think you all have convinced me. I'll another take a look at it this weekend. If I buy it, I'll send a few pics.

Thanks

If the pots are loose, it could be that the nuts fastening them to the body just need to be tightened. And if the pots are noisy, it could be that they just haven't been used in a while. The pots are self-cleaning; turn them back and forth twenty or thirty times and see if that doesn't help. The pots are sealed so you should not spray them with cleaner. Somewhere around here is info on a guy that sells used parts and may have some used Alembic Gotoh tuners. The fingerboard may just need cleaning and oiling. There are several threads around here about the right type of oil for a fingerboard. Check the FAQ and Must Reads sections. If the finish is worn to bare wood, you will probably want to at least spray it with some kind of protective clear coat to keep moisture out. You can have Alembic refinish it for you, but the cost would be more than the price of this bass and would put your total outlay beyond the price of a Persuader in good shape.
