I think it's the peanut guitar. There are other photos of it in here somewhere.
I notice you're in Athens. If you're not busy on the 18th go to the Georgia Theatre and check out Mama's Cookin'. I caught their gig here in Jacksonville last night. They are definitely worth listening to.

It's a peanut guitar made by Alembic. These were prototypes using a generic body style to test other features.
