Hi Jim, I inquired about wood covers for the backing plates on my old Series. I was advised that they do not retrofit due to the difficulty in matching the woods. I believe all their wood pickup covers come with a bass wrapped around them. Hmm.... honest honey, the covers cost $10,000, but I got a free bass! | ||

Our pickups don't have "covers" like some other brands. The decorative part of the pickup is either 1) a plastic or wooden shell filled with polyurethane or 2) molded polyurethane or molded polyurethane with a wood veneer face. In any case there is not a removable cover, and the whole pickup would need to be replaced. That being said, you can order pickups with any decoration you like after the fact, but it's not advisable with Series I/II since the pickups need to be matched to the circuit. You'd have to send your bass in and get it upgraded at the same time. For AXY or MXY pickups, you can order them, and the price would be quoted per job. It depends on the wood and the workload and how fast you want them. You can order wood backplates after the fact too, but they can only retrofit from plastic, since the brass plates are much thinner than the wooden ones. Of course, they can't be continuous. We usually coordinate with the top wood, since most plastic backplates are on instruments without a back laminate. In your case, j_gary, the cover would sit proud of the back of the bass and not look so good. | ||

Hi Mica, thanks for the education. The " not look so good " look would go perfectly with my mug. I don't understand why you cannot match a 25 year old piece of Zebrawood that's been drug all over the world. Shoot, they put a plastic,continuous nose on a 45 year old Michael Jackson and look how well that turned out. On second thought, nevermind. I have to take my medicine now. | ||

j_gary, i remember on my first alembic, my custom mark king fretless(wish i still had it), i had a wooden backplate made after the fact. it came out wonderfully. it wasn't continuous backplates but still very attractive and matched very well. the back was flame walnut, alembic picked out a good piece of walnut to complement. mica, if my bass had the electronics upgrade for the series I/II (01C 12601) does it have to be upgraded again if i get new pickups with a wood veneer face? is that the upgrade you're talking about? | ||

Hi Jim, thanks for the heads up. I've got my old Zebra at Alembic awaiting an update as we speak. I like the thought of wooden covers on the back and pickups. Thanks to this informative thread I'm getting some great ideas on how to send more money to California. Fun stuff here in Alembic land. It's funny how often I say and hear, " I wish I still had that bass". I just sold a beautiful looking and sounding quilted maple SC back to the fella I bought it from, and now I wish I had her back. I gotta get me a rich girlfriend so I can get a bigger house to keep more basses and spend more time looking for more basses and buy more medicine. | ||

2 pound bag of M&M's. It's my medicine for when I've lost my mind due to the constant looking, playing, buying, selling and lots more buying of just about every bass I see. If you change the pickups, the bass will need to be upgraded again. The calibration procedure is for matching pickups to electronics. Your bass, being made in 2001, has been calibrated. |
