I think it's the old lefty learning how to play on an upside down right handed instrument. I know a guitarist who learned to play this way. Makes for a devil of time trying to read the chording hand. :-)

some lefty's learn to play upsidedown instead of restringing their (right handed) guitar or bass.

Jason Smith in Hayseed Dixie also plays like this. His slap technique is unbelievable to watch.

SPyders are very comfortable to play upside down.
THey balance well no matter what side is up;)
