Hello all, New to the club. Have played an Epic exclusively for about ten years now. The tailpiece apparently has some sharp edges and I've been breaking strings where they contact that piece. Funny thing is, it only started to happen about five years ago (maybe twice a year on older strings) and then started happening more and more frequently and on any string, regardless of age/guage. I only mention this because you'd think that the brass might wear with age, not get noticeably sharper. So anyway I bought a round file kit and tried to smooth them down a bit. Not sure if I did the greatest job 'cause I can't tell what the inside of the piece is like, but I haven't broken a string since. Wondering if anyone has had similiar experiences with this, and if there was any better remedy. |

Ignore the attachment (or look if you want). Tried to put the pic in the message but obviously didn't work so good. -Jack |

My ten or so year old Orion type bass is breaking more strings now, but I haven't done anything about it yet. I know what you mean about it seeming that brass would wear roundedly rather than otherwise. I heard the explanation once and it made sense, but I forget what it was. Maybe something like the strings do not wear into the brass exactly; rather they cut into it. I'm not sure though. |
