While I am as "guilty" as anyone else for posting things that may have been inappropriate, including perhaps this very post, a recent thread suggests the following comments. It has been generally observed that treating others with respect is a good thing; and I think this applies to making posts to this forum. This is an international forum. While there are certainly more members here from the US than any other part of the world, there are still quite a large number from Europe, several from Asia, and a few from Canada and other countries and continents as well. Perhaps because the US is more heavily represented, those members from the US, myself included, sometimes forget that we are talking with people from other countries, rather than just a group of neighbors at the local pub. Pretty much every member of this forum agrees that Alembics are exceptional instruments; however there are going to be members that have very differing opinions on practically every other issue. As tempting as it may be, treating fellow members with respect, having respect for fellow members, suggests refraining from making derogatory remarks of a political nature. The same holds for making remarks of a sexual nature. There have been comments made that perhaps might not have been made in front of someone's mother. This is not a "boy's club"; it's an Alembic owner's group. The same also holds for remarks of a religious nature, remarks of an economic nature, etc., etc. If you feel that a discussion is getting "heated", if you feel "defensive", then perhaps rather than responding right away, it might be helpful to take a break, go outside, breath, and then come back with a response that's written in the context of respect. Again, I am as "guilty" as anyone else. I've certainly made remarks that can be seen as supporting one side of a social issue over another. And this very post can certainly be seen as supporting certain "social behaviors" over others. And there may be some who may feel, perhaps rightly, that certain of my remarks may have been directed at them. So this post is directed to me as much as everyone else in the forum. In my view, treating others with respect when posting makes for a better forum. |

Thanks, Dave. Point well taken and certainly appropos here! Cheers, Kevin P.S. As a bonus, at least I'm not the ONLY politically incorrect one here, LOL! |

We can still enjoy this club as a one of the more civilized forums around, compared to the likes of TalkBass ... but I definitely second Dave's suggestion of taking a step back in case a debate threatens to get heated. Still a mistery why there have been so few female members to join this club, and why none of them seem to have stuck around - unless it's for the very reasons Dave is pointing out ... |

Hello, yes, Dave is absolutly right with his thoughts and recommendations. Tonight, back from a really hard road trip to pick up Peggy, I looked up just a few threads, and what did I see: these nasty lil *** words again, LOL ! Now, this certainly is no "boy's board", but it's not a "snob board" either. I like those *** words when they are being used in the right way, to show one's emotions like happiness, anticipation, and such positive vibrations. I don't think women will find that offending either, you know girls' talk, don't you ? Not acceptable in any way, by noone, is of course personal dispute between members. In general, this club is just great (I'd like to say_______)... no, I don't ! Christian (the faker) |

I save my incorrectness for other forums. Not this one. This is a group of peers and professionals who take their craft seriously. I enjoy the respect everyone on this board shows each other....I hope it continues. Kind of a worldwide, cross-cultural, peace thing, you know? Mike |

Music... the universal language. It's only when the playing stops that the trouble starts! Thanks to Alembic for sponsoring this forum, and most especially, good job Dave. |

Gentlemen, and the odd fair lady, I bid you all adieu. The tone of some has been too negative for my tastes. So in keeping with my philosophy, I choose not to participate. Dave you have done a superb job at diplomacy and your love for this company is evident. Continued enjoyment in your role as moderator. Take care and create amazing music with these wonderful instruments. |

Danno; your contributions to this forum have been considerable. Your knowledge of Alembics have helped many here, and your experiences being out there making a living at playing music are for me quite valuable. I, and I'm sure others as well, highly value your input here; and I hope you will reconsider. I know that you and I recently posted our views on an aspect of the music business and that those views suggest that we come to the subject from different perspectives; but please know that I do respect your views and highly value them. Your post in that particular thread had me thinking on the subject for quite a while afterwards; and as a result, I better understood the issues and questions involved. And to me that is what an exchange of ideas is about. The "negative tone" to which you refer is going to happen. Everyone, myself included, hits the Post button a little to soon from time to time. Which gets back to the subject of this thread; speech. Every one of us on this planet suffers to some extent and in some fashion; and from one's individual perspective that suffering can feel quite substantial. And we are all thus worthy of compassion. And part of treating our fellow humans with compassion is our use of speech. It seems to me to be of benefit to all when we refrain from using speech that is harmful or hurtful to others. So, in all aspects of our lives it is probably helpful to pause before we "hit the post button", and to ask ourselves whether our words will be hurtful or helpful. I know that not everyone agrees with my views on speech and on treating each other with compassion; but I wanted to state them here as it seems to be on point. Danno; your knowledge, experience and perspective are a valuable part of this forum. I do hope you will reconsider. |

boy I must have missed something ( or maybe I didn't) cause I have no clue to what happened........... I don't read every posting here, and have only been a member of the club for a little over a year. I have interacted with many of you, and don't really know most of you ( although from reading many of your postings I kind of do). Everybody here seems very knowledgeable, well mannered and polite........ I guess we all rush into things sometimes without thinking of the big picture. it reminds me of a sign a junior high school teacher of mine once had on their wall: "Be sure to engage brain before putting mouth in gear" ( in this respect Keyboard or Post button ?) I don't know............. |

Danno: I've been following this thread and the previous one that spawned it, and I've got to tell you, your above post comes as quite a shock. I'm at a loss as to what caused such a drastic reaction, but I sincerely hope you reconsider. I think I can accurately speak for this board in stating that you are very much respected and appreciated in this group. Should you make good on your fare-thee-well, your contributions will be sorely missed. I wish you and yours continued health and happiness. Should you reconsider, and stay around, all will undoubtedly rejoice. Bill, tgo |

just a bass player here. you know, the guy that everyone thinks is just supporting while actually holding the whole thing together and figuring out where it's going--all the while without a flinch that shows what's ok and what's not in everyone else's behavior. so, if a fellow bass player is miffed enough to storm out, it's pretty serious. i'll echo the last few posts--danno, please don't go. but if you must, keep us in your thoughts and we'll do the same for you. dw |

Don't really know what happened either, and I've been looking around for the threads that caused this stir. I can only think of the 'small dealers' thread/discussion that was too personal from the start. But all in all it's never a good sign if someone decides to leave a place that the majority of participants (including me) STILL considers to be one of the politest, friendliest places on the web. Directly or indirectly, we can all learn something here... Wilfred |
