I found this old Alembic Pickup on e-Bay. Is possible, only by picture, to establish if It is a single coil or humcancelling coil. I appreciate if someone can help me to recognize It. Thanks

My guess would be a late '70's single coil. John (Message edited by 811952 on January 13, 2006) |

The pickup lead is the old series type, we never put those ends on AXYs, so I would say it's a single coil. Valentino |

Thanks for your care. I don't know the year when the Alembic changed the pickups connector. I thought that the connector could be the key to recognize It and you give me the confirmation. Thanks Val. I see the similar pickups shape in old Distillate and Persuader. This is my first doubt. Are the pickups installed in these basses single or humcancelling ? I have also another doubt. Is there a difference between the bridge and neck pickup in Alembic basses ? Thanks Art |

Bridge and neck pickups only have different cable lengths, the actual coils are identical. The Series I pickups and AXY pickups share the same mold, so they do look the same. The AXY pickups (those that come in the Distillate and Persuaders and others) are stacked humcancelling pickups. |

Hello Art, Distillate and Persuaders both have AXYs only (humcanceling), unless they were custom ordered with series electronics, in which case you 'd see a hum canceler in the middle. The shape of the single coils and the AXYs is the same, so they are hard to tell apart in pictures. The single coils are much heavier then the AXYs, though, so if you had one of each in your hands you could tell them apart form the weight. There is no electronic difference between bridge and neck pickup; generally the lead on the neck pickup is a bit longer, but that's it. Valentino |
