Hello all, I'd like to replace the machine heads on my 94 MK standard because they are showing significant signs of wearing out and have almost lost their complete gold plating. What brand/model of tuners do I need ? May I use the Schaller M4 (2L/2R) ? Is it possible to use the Schaller M4-2000 as well ? Luthiers wisdom welcome :-) |

If the tuners are marked with an Alembic "A" on the back or say "Made in Japan" then you should replace with the Gotoh GB7 tuners. The Schallers have a smaller mounting diameter than the Gotohs we usually use. You would need to either fill and redrill the mounting holes or fashion a sleeve to take up the space. You'll notice that most of the instruments we made in the 1970s had chrome tuners. This is becuase that finish is the most durable. But many people were disappointed that the tuner finish didn't match the colo rof the brass hardware, so I think in about 1989 or so we went to mostly gold finished tuners. I should get replacement parts up in the store, I'm sure you're not the only one with worn finish. |

Thanks, Mica. Yes, they are marked with an Alembic "A". I only want to replace the tuners and don't want to modify the MK. I guess I go for the Gotoh tuners. Unfortunately the Gotoh GB7 don't seem to be easy to buy in Germany. The only source I found is BestGuitarParts in the US. |
