I bought a used four-string Alembic Orion a couple of years ago. I liked it - good action, good tones, etc. But, my band plays in a few places where I didn't feel comfortable carrying the Alembic, so I have used one of my five-strings instead. We do a stage show once a month in a refurbished theater on the National Historic Register. Beautiful place. Very good acoustics, very intimate. No smoking, no drinking, etc. This time I took the Alembic. I play through the amp only on this stage and do not run through the p.a. system. Wow! I had forgotten how good the Alembic sounds. One of the guest-singers complimented me on the sound of the bass. The guest-pianist told me he "could hear every single note." Plus, the neck is very fast and playable, the weight is nice and is overall comfortable. The manager of the building is a former touring bassist with a major singer, and he pointed out after the show that the volume was perfect and the sound was great! Three compliments in one night, all from musicians. The problem with having more than one bass is that you can only play one and you tend to forget why you purchased that particular bass in the first place. Then, when you finally pick it up and play it, you remember. I had one of those "wow" moments Saturday night. I will definitely take the Alembic to this gig from now on. Wow! |
