I bought a beautiful epic from ebay the other day, and I'm dealing with an honest and forthright seller who I have been in contact constantly. BUT today I received a 'second chance offer' from a scammer urging me to go outside of ebay channels to buy the bass because ' the high bidder couldn't pay'. If I had come in second on this auction I would have been very tempted to follow up on this, but I AM THE HIGH BIDDER! I contacted ebay and the seller(who is concerned) about this, but it is a very professional looking scam with actual ebay links embedded in the email regarding second chance offers etc. I can guarantee that everyone who bid on this bass has received this mailing. Some poor soul will probably fall for this. I'm currently trying to string this person along to get as much information as possible to turn over to the authorities. It would be great if I could actually 'pick up' the non existent bass. Posted on this a couple of weeks ago. The bottom line is that despite what it looks like, if you have to email someone in private to close the deal it's a scam. There are loads of these emails, so the email address though thoughtful, is a minor detail. The scam is always send money first and nothing heard from that moment. Ultimately, these scams are clever to an extent and must be fooling some people. Recently an elderly Czech citizen shot a Nigerian embassy official after he was scammed by a Nigerian 419 scammer (look up google, about 419 scams). Most amusingly, last month I was approached to do a one off bass gig in South Africa. The cheque came to me in advance, and was for about USD$4000. If you cash this, it will show in your account for a while before it bounces, and your employers will ask you to pay this company or that company for this or that ( in this case, a nominated charter flight); out of funds supposedly advanced to you. of course, this is where the fraud occurs. The cheque is fraudulent. In my case the cheque was supposedly from a bank I know, but looks like nothing like a real one. Most of these frauds are Nigerian, or mainland Chinese. What is clever about these scams is that they are not for extremely large sums of money. FYI, the authorities frankly don't give a damn. (Message edited by 0vid on September 11, 2006) | ||

The same thing happened to me on ebay. I was bidding on a Skylark and got the same official looking 2nd chance offer. I knew it was a scam when he asked for payment by western union. I was so excited at first and almost fell for it. There are a lot of scum bags out there. | ||

Whenever I've received a "second chance offer" email, I never click on the link in the email. Rather, I log into my ebay acount and look at the messages. If the email was legit, it will also appear in the messages section. I have received legitimate second chance offers, but they are greatly in the minority. As Sgt. yah, this one was strange because I won the bass. It's on it's way now as I track it through fedex. I reported it through ebay's spoof@ebay.com, but I know nothing will be done about it. The scammer didn't reply to my email about the offer either. | ||

I had something similar happen to me but it turned out to be legitimate. It was a local seller so I was able to meet him and paid cash once I had inspected the bass. Otherwise I would not have done it. | ||
