The fun thing about working as a luthier is that you get repair jobs involving the widest possible range of brands and one-offs. This last week saw me fixing up a 1991 Alembic Essence with a three piece maple through neck and with cobolo tops on the wings four string bass which had some neck issues. Turns out that the owner of that bass loves super light strings so they don't give enough pull to set the neck straight. So we had to slacken the trussrods to counter balance it and we had to level the frets (because the neck had been bending over backwards for so long several frets ended up higher than they should be on the fingerboard) after the frets were levelled, I crowned them and polished them. I couldn't resist plugging it in and giving it a go after I put it together again. My Boss (Luthier Jan Knooren) owns a series one "Stanley" small body Alembic so he was all ears to see how close this much less elaborate Alembic sounded in comparison. The bass sounded like an Alembic, that powerful clean tone that cuts through everything. I felt a little sorrow when I had to hand the bass over again, fine little bass. |
