There was a profile of this bass in VINTAGE GUITAR around a year ago. Radle is the bassist on two of my favorite recordings; With Eric on LAYLA, and part of the band on Cocker's MAD DOGS and ENGLISHMEN. Carl was part of that whole Tulsa crew (Leon Russell, JJ Cale, Jamie Oldaker, etc.) that put Eric back on his feet after he'd really had enough of it all after Cream and Blind Faith. There's more about this in this month's VINTAGE GUITAR cover piece with him and JJ Cale. One of my favorite things he did is the pentatonic-based shapes he plays under the chorus of 'Bell Bottom Blues', that arching part outlining the changes. Brilliant, not something you'd ordinarlily think of under blues changes. You also hear him following Leon's hammered scale runs on the outro to 'Let It Rain' from Eric's first solo album, also made up with the Mad Dogs band and Leon Russell. Radle is one of those guys that was my prototype: Deadly on the groove, but knowing JUST where to drop these little licks or an original line in an unexpected place that REALLY works to add a lot without getting in the way or disturbing the flow. A lesson lost in these days of the Bass Player Olympics. |
