Sounds like fun, I'm in.

If we chased my girls out of the house for an afternoon we'd have plenty of room.

Just for future planning, I have something on the calendar after 5pm every other Saturday starting this weekend.

Jorge, all the way from the Big Easy? I'm impressed.

If a few more of the DFW members chime in we may need to consider a different venue. Probably with enough gear...

You've seen my music room Mike, 2 people and it's full. LOL.

I bet we can figure somthing out. What we need to know first is when and then the where.

I'd love to see your S-2 in person Jorge, the picture looks awsome.

Olie's right, Larry Morgan is no longer an Alembic dealer. Olie's also right about deciding on when and where..let's decide on that first. Wow, that's twice in one day, Olie, take the rest of the day off.

David, Mid-Feb also works for me, maybe the 10th?

Where is Wayne? Good question. I think there are a few others, too. smuprof?

I will be away from my computer till monday, if anyone comes up with a place or date and time, take the ball and run with it !!!!!!!

it sure would be cool to have $100,000 worth of Alembic's in one place

now that would be a Kodak moment

Hey guys, it sounds like big fun. Let me know if you take it on the road! LOL As for $100,000 worth of Alembics in one place, I've think I've seen quite a bit more than that. It IS very impressive. (Of course, it was in Santa Rosa - hehehehe).

When you guys get the Dallas group together, make sure everyone brings along their motorcyle and a cooler full of their favorite beer (IBC for Olie)

Let the games begin.

Just a thought...

I am not sure I'd advertise the meeting place & time on the club for no other reason that if some ill-intentioned lurker sees "over a 100,000$ worth of Alembic will be at such and such location on this day" he may think to show up at the meeting with a stocking and a gun. Although I would not be surprised to learn that many of you have guns too; after all we are talking about Texas...still, you wouldn't want a shootout near your Alembic, right? :-)

I'd make sure all the details are e-mailed privately.

ROY, The title of the Thread was "BIKE Week".
And please reread the thread, I wasn't the first to mention motorcycles. Sorry if I offended you.

And VAL has a good point, we probably should keep this via one on one contact.

PS. I don't get the "annoying fly" part.

I don't think Val's post had anything to do with 90k6259b's post. I think Val was simply saying that it might not be a good idea to advertise where the get together is being held. Probably not a bad idea based on the value of the instruments and the amps/cabs that will invariably accompany the basses.

My apologies for the beer and motorcycle crack above- it was meant to be tongue in cheek, but apparently my cheek was the only one to get the message.

I hope y'all enjoy the get together. Those who attend need to make sure they bring along cameras and post pictures when it's all said and done.

Hey, count me in on the get together. I'm a two Alembic guy now living in Plano.

I agree with Val on a bit of privacy for the final place and time.

One thought, if we do it on a weekend - I've got a pretty good-sized office near Spring Valley and the Tollway, with a finished conference room and no furniture. It'll mean everyone bringing in amps (no music gear in the office now)

Oh, and we'll need Diet Coke too :-)

Mike,
I got your e-mails and everyone else's. If this falls on the weekend before that's cool. Even if it falls on the 17th I might not be able to make it as we are trying to fill in that Saturday. I would love to be a part of this but I do need to work. So basically what I'm saying is please don't try to set this up on my account. Majority rules here. Take care guys.

What about other cities too? I'm here in New Orleans, so I'm a bit of a drive for just an afternoon of playing. But maybe you guys could organize something larger? Include greater Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma maybe. Personally I would love to meet other Alembic players, because I never have! It would be nice play and discuss the instruments and playing in general. By the way I played the first Alembic I ever played at a little store in Garland, Tx.

I bet that little store in Garland was Larry Morgan Music and Sound.

Daniel, currently we're looking at representation from Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana. This just happens to be taking place in Texas due to David's initial post.

Hey, Jorge and Michael. I'm an alembic owner in New Orleans, too. I was just wondering where ya'll had gone to get your Alembics? I got mine from Bass Central in Flordia, but it prohibited me from getting hands on experience before I bought it. I noticed that ya'll had Series I's and a II's, when are your bands playing next I'd like to get a chance to hear a Series in person, because ideally I'd like to get one for my next Alembic.

Hey Daniel: I dealt with Will Gunn. He used to be in the Nashville area. Since my brother used to live there I spent a lot of time up there. He has since moved to Iowa but he is an Alembic-only dealer. Check out his website at www.willgunnguitars.com

Shoot me an e-mail if you want to get together and see what you think about SII. Jorge

Do we still need a drummer?

Can't wait to get together.

Six Bassist made it. Some beautiful instruments and some real good players too. I hope we do it agin soon. Some great stories and history about their instruments too. The other guys got some real good photos and should be posting them soon.

I must admit though Wayne has got me jonesin' for a Fretless S-2. Man that S-2 of his with the ebony lams in the neck, simply mArvelous.

Mike's drummer from his church showed up and played. Great drummer too, easy to jam with.
No guitar player though. Maybe next we can line one up. Maybe we can talk Bill in to coming.

(Use your best Mickey Spilane) It was grey and cool that Saturday morning when I found Olie and David T, the Oklahoma Kid loitering outside the Chase Bank building. Pacing back and forth like a couple of currs just waiting for an old soup bone to fight over, feral and hungry...

...okay, maybe not, but they were the first at the scene.

A "full report" would take some doing. With so much to look at and compare, there were a number of converastions happening all at once about bases, favorite players, albums, gig stories, gear and you name it while someone else was jamming away.

Lots of oohs and aaahhhs when the cases started opening up. It's one thing to see a stunning bass on the web and quite a different matter when you can see the inlay work up close as on Wayne's Unicorn and Jorge's Bird. It'll catch your breath. All in all it was a euphoric vibe to be standing around all that hand-crafted wood. I don't know, it was just cooooool.

You can see from Olie's post that there were a number of Alembics to try out, that was my mission. Never made it to any of the Series bases (I don't need an acute GAS Attack). I was anxious to try David's Epic. Then I saw Jorge's Distellate and then John's Exploiter and then Wayne's fretless S2...it just wouldn't stop.

Plenty of "Hey, mind if I try your .." from everyone. I don't think a sugar-freak turned loose in a candy store could have had as much fun. Old ones, new ones, fat ones, skinny ones, Anniversaries, Series, bright, mellow, dented and weathered, shinny and new. Quite a collection.

The format was prety loose: set a groove and go. I don't recall anyone saying, "Hey, do you know this one?" It was mostly a free for all, jumping in and out and playing off each other. I think the most at ony one time was three guys collaborating on someone's original line. All improv. For the most part Olie kept the jamming going, he's a funkmeister and probably plays in his sleep. Overall, nice contributions from everyone.

Pete Foskett layed down really nice patterns and had no trouble finding the pocket. It would have been a different experience if he hadn't made it. We need a guitar player for the next jam (anyone up for it?). For the record, Pete made the comment, " I really like Alembic bases." Although Pete knew a number of "drummer jokes", he falls well outside of that box.

It all came together fairly well off-line. And for that I thank everyone. Especially David and Jorge who each drove several hours one way. And David was early! Way to go, guys.

I still have some left over IBCs, but I don't think they'll last til we do it again.

Hey All -

Without a doubt the highlight of my year . . . and I can say that even though its only February. We've already kicked around a fall reprise. The music was awesome (I second Jorge's comment on more practice - everyone was excellent).

Just some quick notes:

1. I really wasn't sure what having six bass players jamming would be like, but at one point five us were playing together and it sounded great - thunder from heaven.

2. The funniest moment had to be as we were loading out . . . and had to open all of the cases again to make sure no one "accidentally" took home a different bass. :-) It's amazing how familiar your case is until it is surrounded by 13 other Alembic cases.

3. The variety of instruments was great, but Mike pointed out we had no Stanleys, Orions, Rogues, Essences, Excels or Europas (lots of unique Signatures and Series basses though). Opportunities to fill in the gaps next time!

4. Alembic owners are a very unique group of fantastic people. I don't believe any of us had met more than one other individual in group, yet it was immediately like getting together with a group of old friends.

Wayne's wife gets the prize as the only spouse brave enough to attend (and bring cookies), and kudos to Mike for bringing the drummer Pete with his custom Yamaha set - no question he'd own Alembics if he played bass. :-)

We'll post a complete list of the instruments and more photos and details soon.

My only regret is we didn't record. There were some good grooves being layed down. It did sound thunderous (in a good way).

And John head the nail on the, it was like we'd known each other for ever.

I loved the jammin but especially liked the stories each had about their axes;
Waynes fretless has an incredible story behind it. (I thougt being shipped the wrong axe when I bought my MK-5 was hilarious, but Wayne's saga tops that)
The reason behind the position of Jorge's "Bird of Freedom" inlay was cool too.
And Davids 76 Series I found most appealing for it reminded me of the first Alembic I'd seen ( around 1976) and the fact that he is the first and only owner of it is way cool.

A great bunch of people as well as players.

When John set the timer for the above shot and was running back to get in the photo, I think I could hear Wayne and Jorge praying,...don't trip...please don't trip...LOL

David - that's a great idea. I'll make a new topic later on so the pics won't scroll off into archive land.

I sent them Saturday night John and again on Sunday. The pix may be too large to send all at once. I just sent them again and split them up in to three groups.
My photos aren't too good, I was having so much playing that I forgot to take a lot of pix'.

This must have been incredible! What a cool idea! I don't think we'll ever see one of these in Wyoming, so I may have to make a trip for the next one...

I didn't take that many and after looking at them last night, not sure they're worth contributing to the thread. I'll sen them on anyway, but that won't be until this weekend.
