Set Neck Vs. Neck Through

Anyway my question is, does one lose the "Growl factor" when going from a set neck to a full neck through bass. In other words in your opinions do you need a set neck to get the growl or will a neck through bass, specifically a Series II get that growl sound. My single pick-up Excel has a nice growl to it but my neck-through 2 pick-up Carvin does not get it. Is it the particular brand that won't get it or the neck config? Even more specific, is it a bolt on more than a set neck or vs. versa?
