Genesis performing their Hit "Misunderstanding" live during the ABACAP tour in the early eighties. And Mike Rutherford appears to be laying down the bottom on an Alembic. The crown shaped headstock and the oval inlays are give aways. So what's the story behind Mike's Alembic?

All these camera-men will end in the hell because they never focalize the bass player in such films!
Argh!

It's not the camera-people nearly as much as it is the producers calling the shots. You can hear a bass player going to town on a lick and see video of a guitar player hacking away at chords or a drummer pounding his toms.

I have some concert footage that was shown on the tv and Mike is using an Alembic Series. Looks (and sounds)great. I noticed that he'd moved the strap button to the lower horn though; I guess he wasn't happy with the balance. I know that after this he started using the Steinbergers; he described the huge tone range of the Alembic as "almost too confusing".

It takes time to get used to the "world of sounds" of a series bass & alot of bassists cant handle the variations & therefore they switch basses.......that's a result from years of playing P-bass (the two knob syndrome).

The tone knob on my old P-bass didn't change anything that I could tell. I figured it was there for symmetry.

Michael Rutherford is HOW I discovered Alembic!!

After drooling over his One-off Shergold doubleneck, I saw his equipment list and photos that showed an Omega Series bass, and I began hunting for an Alembic to try out...which then got me hooked!!

THANK YOU!

I always wondered who made that Guitar that Daryl played in the first couple of tours he did with Genesis.

Looks like a wall-mount hanger to me. The picture is turned to the right.

I found footage of that same concert which shows Mike's Alembic much better.

And yes indeed, he has the strap on the lower bout, probably to improve the balance of that bass.

Mike Rutherford can also be seen playing an Alembic S1 on the "Three sides live" video (a documentary about Genesis during the Abacab tour) : This VHS tape was published by Virgin some 25 years ago. It has to be said that Mike only used his Alembic for 2 or 3 songs in this show (Darryl Stuermer played a Fender Precision I think when Mike played the guitar parts). On the Mama tour, he used a Status S2 (A Strata to be more precise - The previous name of Status before Fender asked Rob Green to change it because it sounded too much like "Strato").

Wow, that's from the "Six Of The Best" reunion concert in 1982 where they had quite a full stage, with Peter Gabriel (seen playing percussion on the pictures), Steve Hackett, Mike Rutherford, Phil Collins, Tony Banks Daryl Steurmer and Chester Thompson.

There are bootlegs from that one off reunion performance but no official recordings or films which is a damn shame.

Yes that's right. I have the 2 CDs bootleg and the sound is really poor. Just for fans I suppose.
