The renewed Alembic Custom Quote for the Series I bass states that this bass comes with a "surface mounted logo with shell" on the headstock. Does anyone know what that is exactly?

It's the same thing as the usual logo with shell, the difference is that the traditional logo with shell is recessed in the headstock and covered by the finish, the "surface mounted logo with shell" is not inlaid and covered by the finish. In other words you can touch this one. Pricewise the difference is about 375$ or so, I think. I believe the "surface mounted logo" can be added fairly easily to any existing Alembic, which I think is really cool.

Mica,
Can one purchase the surface mount logo with shell for an existing bass? If so, what's the going price?

This is a new thing. The Surface Mounted Logo with Shell is like the Inlaid Logo with Shell, only it's not mounted untder the finish and as Valentino observed, can be installed after an instrument is completed.

We have a strict policy on logos that they can only be installed here at the factory.

For reference, here are logo replacement prices for instruments that are already made:

logo style price
bronze $75
sterling silver $150
surface with shell $575
inlaid with shell $1150*

*Note that the inlaid logo with shell includes peghead refinishing which is required to add this feature after an instrument is already made.

Here's what the new style logo looks like:

Mica,

What does "with shell" mean?

Is there a "without shell" version?

The traditional style logo is metal (silver, bronze, gold) mounted on the guitar. Originally these were handcut from a sheet of silver. The logos have been cast by the same jeweler since 1976. This is an example of the traditional style on a Brown Bass:

You can see the wood through the logo.

Some of the newer styles have abalone, mother of pearl or other shell behind the logo for decoration.

Series I basses and guitars now come standard with the Surface mounted logo with shell, the Series IIs with the inlaid logo. The other models come with either bronze or sterling silver logos without shell.
