I love the black bass. It looks very cool. I only wish there was a short body series I with the same color (all black).

If anybody have a pictures of an all black shory, I would love to see it. I don't even know if this have been done before.

It has. Problem: It was John Entwistle's, with a graphite neck, so it cost about as much as a certain Alembic guitar with DiMarzio's in it! lol

Yes, this is the body I had in mind. However, it looks more of a dark gray. The graphite neck color is not attractive to me. I am looking for full black shorty. This bass is no doubt a beauty, but the colors are not the same as the feature bass. The Bigsby looks great, but I think its turn the wrong dirction.

I never seen an all black shorty.

I am sure a short would look cool in all black.

However, the red string tips in the feature looks 80's ish (I would just go for stainless steel strings tips for that cleaner look. The red string tips are distracting, and it makes the black look cheap.

Just my opinion.

Picture is from the auction of JE's gear that was posted in the artist section earlier, and shown as part of his collection here. Rumor has it was used on the Who song "905".

Guys,
plse allow me to come in with a few more info on the Piccolo Bass:
1. the bass was originally owned by JE and did not belong to SC
2. it was auctioned at Sothebys for GBP 4560, currently beeing with
a JE fan in the States
3. yep it was used for the middle part of 905 but most prominent
for the solo part in Dancing Master of the TLTH album

Sounds like a steal at that auction price to me. So the guitar with DiMarzios sold for just a wee bit more. Go figure! lol

I would agree. The bass pictured, was nothing I had ever seen with SC. However, SC did have a bigsby on his brown alembic. It is possible to confuse the two. However, to prove my point, just google search SC "I want to play for you". There, on the album cover, you will see this brown bass with a bigsby.

The real question is: Who came up with the idea first... SC or JE because I don't see many people rushing to go out to drill any holes into their Alembic(s) just for a few tricks with sound.

I put a bigsby on my non-alembic bass, and bending harmonics and sustaining notes were the big push for me to do this. Also, being that I put a bigsby on my fretless bass, I claim to be the first. he he eh :-)

I still want a solid all black shorty in my life time, and the featured bass comes a little closer to my dream bass.

I still think that Alembic should entertain the idea of developing their own version of a Bigsby-type vibrato unit (imagine all that brass!!!!).... Just think of how well they refined the tuneomatic style bridge....

We've discussed before the inherent problems that exist in the Bigsby (slack, friction, etc), but I believe that Alembic could breathe new life into such a unit. Plus, as far as guitars go, trems of the Kahler and Floyd variety seem to detract from the value of used Alembics.

Just a thought....

Yeah if they did make an Alembic vibrato, I think they should consider one that connects from the metal back plate and not on the wood. They should make it where, it can be removed to the point, nobody could tell if the device was ever used. Completely transparent.

I just couldn't bare drilling a hole in my 1976 shorty, just for a bigsby or even Alembic made them. I just don't see the value.

Brass would look cool. But, they should offer a variety of metal options. I'm thinking a cobalt blue, or somthing stealthy like a black.

Don't get me wrong, I do like Bigsby a lot, a whole lot because they created the option (and a very good one, at that). I love the vintage look it give my bass and it work great too.

Like Jaco, I removed my frets and on the blue bass. It sounds great with a stereo chorus and a running it through a F-2B fat.

Being that Victor Wooten uses the YING/YANG symbols as part of his commercial image, and with the featured Alembic also using YING/YANG image incrusted on the new featured bass... hummmmm

Maybe this feature bass will become Victor Wooten's signature bass in the future?

Does a Digitech Whammy pedal do the same as a mechanical vibrato??
When I spoke to Mica back in 2000 I mentioned the Bigsby on Stan's bass and he requested it so they did it for him.
You can hear him use it on the title track 'I Wanna Play For You' after the one of the chorus lines..
I agree with the majority..could not bring myself to do that modification..maybe on a cheap bass but not my MK signature

Scan upward, and you should see my blue fretless bass with a bigsby. It was easy to support this idea on my blue OHara bass. But to be honest, my OHara is a limited production bass too. You will never see another bass like this on the planet, for this is the only one around.

My Alembic (pictured next to the blue bass) didn't have enough room for the bigsby anyway. The OHara had much more room, and it plays great. I never seen a fretless bass with a bigsby, so I would be the first to try it :-)

Not too long ago I put a Kahler bass whammy on a Cheap musicman copy for a customer who wanted to do the kind of tricks that Les Claypool does on his bass.

I'd say the Kahler works a lot better than a Bigsby and can be fine tuned to meet certain demands on how smooth or stiff the player wants it to feel.

The Kahler is worlds apart from the Bigsby in terms of elegance and functionality. The Bigsby looks really cool though.. ;)

I have a new Kahler Hybrid on an Ibanez Prestiege that Ive tricked out to be like Vic Wooten's Fodera. The Kahler is awesome in many ways, but the most being larger mass and contact with body wood, plus springs returning the string vibrations back into the strings, much like the Alembic brass tone bar. Bending harmonics is cool, too. I spoke with Brian Barrett at the Low End about modding my Distillate with a Kahler and of course, he thought it would destroy the value. My 1981 Distillate looks showroom new with only minimal wear on the hardware and ultra-fine scratches in the finish from cheap polishing clothes that I have almost removed with Smith Classic Polish!
