just curious. Can you put a high C on a 5-string (E-A-D-G-C) or would you have to replace the nut and saddles?

I've successfully done it on a non-Alembic bass. As long as you're going with a higher gauge, the nut should be okay, though the strings may tend to move around a little bit in the nut - you may or may not notice it.

The saddles should be fine, but remember that you're going to have to adjust your intonation and potentially the truss rod, as there will be less tension on the neck.

Aside from making a truss rod(s) adjustment and fixing the intonation after making that switch you might also have to shim the nut slots a bit due to the different gauge strings. That's actually really easily done with a small scrap of paper from the package the strings come in. I did that on my Modulus Q4 when I had it strung as a piccolo bass with great success.

Shimming for general fit might be necessary if the string moves around, but most most Alembics have that adjustable nut that can be raised if action is the issue.

When I got my Europa bass it was strung with a high C, and it sounded great. When I re-strung it back to standard with a Low B, i didn't have to change anything at all. That is probably more to do with the fact it was originally set up, nut, saddles etc, for stringing with a low B.

On a Fender Deluxe Jazz bass, I used an E-C tuning but added a hipshot bass extender on the E string.
