I can't see why Mr. King is bothering. It's obvious that he's a really crap player and he's never EVER going to make anything out of that style of his ;-) I have to stop watching that 15 minute video - Senior Management is getting a bit fed-up of it now!!!!!!! rogertvr, I thought that everyone would appreciate the sound of the Alembic being played in an agressively percussive way... I think the bass has incredible tract-ability ringing out notes during a fast slap. that's the only reason I posted this link. Not because Mark is such a great bass player. I know he isn't the best out there, I can tell that he's really just selling his mechanical ability to slap fast. I realize that some people will not appreciate his style and I'm not offended by that. But you have to admit- that is an awesome sounding bass regardless of who's playing it. If you were offended by this, I apologize, and hope you accept my apology. | ||

muller1007, that bass solo is incredible. the video and sound does not do it justice. too bad the sound quality of the ram file is not that good... unless my real player is not working correctly. | ||

You're quite right about the sound and picture quality of this particular ram file. I have the original recording on DVD, so I do know how it is supposed to sound. It is indeed incredible. Duncan | ||

rogertvr, Hey man, sorry i misunderstood you. Yes, I have recorded most of his tune from the "influences" album. He rips it up on those, especially that long song (can't remember the name) where he touches many different venues and does that incredibly difficult/awkward bass solo towards the end. In that one song i noticed that he did not play an alembic, might have been that look-alike twin the "JayDee" bass. but the rest i believe he did. I am a big level 42 fan myself- love those 80's tunes. Sometimes i fantasize and imagine if i was the bassist for them how much fun i would be having with my series 2 bass (if i had one :-). HiFi, I've dug out the record - haven't played this for a while! The long track on side 1 is called 'The Essential'. The sleeve notes say that Mark King plays basses, guitar, keyboards, percussion and drums. Of course he also sings too. Do you think he might be a little talented? ;-) It also says that he uses JayDee and Status II basses (no Alembics), Trace Elliot amplification (yes!!!!!!!!!!!! - good man!!!!!!!!!) and Superwound strings. If you're not interested in keyboards, stop reading now! The keyboards as played by Mike Lindup and Adrian Lee are Fender Rhodes, Yamaha DX7 and Wave PPG respectively. It's about time I contributed something useful to this club after all the help I've received! | ||

Hifi, You can purchase Mark King/Level 42 material through his website www.level42.com or check www.audiophileimports.com . Audiophile have quite a collection of live material of this bass player. I highly recommend the "Live on the Isle of Whight 2000" DVD, where Mark King plays his Series II Alembics (Note that it is a region 2 DVD though!). On the other DVD's Mark uses GB basses and Status Graphite Kingbasses. They sound fine, but they're not Alembics! During the machine gun bass solo on "The Essential" Mark actually plays a Status Series II bass. In the period where he recorded "Influences" he didn't play Alembic yet. He started playing Alembic from around 1987. Duncan | ||

thanks guys. i went to the audiophile imports site and saw what i think i wanted. checked out that real player sample of "the chinese way"... simply awesome bass sound, can't get enough of it. Alembic really found something when they created the Q filter- those smooth, fluid highs... talk about perfectly even tone bass sound. | ||

This is the best place to shop for DVDs. Careful on the Canadian ones, if you are in a hurry for your order. They take weeks to deliver. Just some FYI to save youse people a few bucks. | ||
