I know the rig can vary greatly on music and playing style but heres the senero: What type amp head/watt & speaker combination for live performance in a small venue (less than 500 occupants) keeping in mine instuments with be through PS system. Rig of course needs enough power for medium size stage. I curently am using a custom 1000 watt w/ 2 15" EVXs. I dont believe I'm getting the best sound I can. Any help or opinions appreciated. Steve. I expect everyone will give a totally different answer as we've all spent years building up rigs to our own personal tastes. It's my belief that as far as bass goes, it's alot better to have headroom then to be underpowered on stage so this is the rig I use for every situation.. Eden Navigator Pre-amp - hugely versatile and transparent. QSC PLX2402 power amp - running 700w / channel at 4 ohms. EBS NEO 4x10 and EBS NEO 2x12 cabinets. As I said, I take this rig everywhere - basses I use are all 5 string, MK deluxe, fretless rogue and epic. Before I added a korg dtr2000 tuner...  Graeme | ||

I own an Epic and get a great sound through my Gallien Krueger 1001RB-II running bi-amped through a GK410RBH and 115RBH cab. I also like the sound of Eden and EBS rigs | ||

I use: Eden Navigator preamp QSC PLX3002 power amp 1 or 2 Bag End 2X10 cabinets (1/2 of PLX3002) 1 or 2 Bag End 18" ELF subs (other half of PLX3002) Most of the time I use one 2X10 and one 1X18. I play a combination of 4 and 5 string Alembic basses. Keith | ||

My favorite at the moment for my Rogue 5 string: Mesa Boogie Venture combo - this is their M-Pulse 600 head paired with 2 12" speakers. It is insanely loud, has tons of low end, and can give you all the tube grind that you could ever want. I played a decent sized venue last year during the holidays (3000 people) and this amp was more than capable of giving me adequate stage volume. Any of the larger Mesa amps also sound stunning. The Titan V12 + Powerhouse 8x10 cab is nothing short of earth moving. A M-Pulse 600 + Powerhouse 4x10 cab would be more than enough in the venues that you list above. | ||

I love Glockenklang stuff. A great compliment to Alembics. The Glock stuff really lets the instrument through. They sound like whatever you plug into them. I use the Heart-Rock amp with a Double (2x12) cab. At 8 ohms it is 400 watts and plenty loud for the type of gig you are talking about. I think Glock is more honest about their power ratings than a lot of companies. Anyway if I were to add a cab (which would bring the output to 750 watts at 4 ohm) it would be an additional Double. They sound amazing! In short Glocks scream and sound very pleasant and musical - no harshness in the highs or mud in the lows. | ||

In general, I think you have a hard time beating a QSC PLX series power amp. For the overall combination of power tone and weight, they are hard to beat. When weight is no object, many people swear by the Crest CA-9. I use a PLX and I am so happy with the power section that I can't comprehend how the Crest could be noticeably better, though I haven't ever had them side by side at gig volumes. If you really want the low B to work, there's no such thing as too much power. The preamp selection is a matter of personal taste and features. The Alembic preamps have great tone, but not much in the way of features. More modern designs give you additional EQ features, foot-switchable loops and additional channels, or digital effects. Your choice has to depend on what sort of music you're looking to play. For a cover band that's trying to duplicate the originals as closely as possible, I think the latest Line6 Live series gear is great. The tones aren't the same as actually carrying half a dozen amps with you, but it's close enough for that sort of work. If you're doing your own thing, then you really just need to listen to some different things and see what speaks to you. Speakers will be critical to getting what you want out of that low B string. It's hard to get the most out of a B string with really portable gear and I gave up on doing it. Dave's rig is great, but how does it match up with what you're trying to do in terms of space occupation and portability? I know I wouldn't want to lug that around on a regular basis. I am a big fan of the tone of the Schroeder cabinets and use a 21012L for any size room or outdoors. They have a great punch to allow you to really hear yourself on stage in spite of what the guitars may be doing. See if there's a dealer in your area and go out to give them a listen. I think a PLX power amp is an easy decision. Beyond that, there may be some trial and error to get what sounds best to you. | ||

Thanks for all the great input.It is very helpful and I'm really scatching my head now! I have to admit I've been playing for longer than I may want to admit and have never really been satisfied with my sound but I'm bound & determined to get there soon. Hey Steve, If you want ALL the sound in ONE cabinet, the AccuGroove El Whappo is hard to beat! It is a 4 way cab with ferro fluid tweeters which are really smooooth! Rated at 800 watts, and able to reproduce a 5 string bass detuned to a low A. Studio quality sound matches the Alembic really well. It has detachable casters, and a padded cover. Not too heavy ~ 85 lbs. Can be matched with any amp/preamp to your liking. I have an SWR SM900 amp which is a nice match, plus an SF-2 for greater flexibility. Sounds really great with a grand ballsy tone.  Kris | ||

Hey Kris Your AccuGroove all in one is definely too cool! Maybe some day. I'm going to build around my current cabs. see the new thread. Jackos rig looks plenty powerful too but Davehoucks has to be the real ass kicker here! My new set up will probably be somewhere in between. Kris thats a really nice looking axe! My back is feeling better these days. My rig isn't massive. I play with friends on weekends and some open mics at some pubs. My 98 Rogue 5 runs through the F-1X to a Carvin DCM 1000 into 2 Aguilar GS 112's. Real deep and fat. Nothing real big but the sound. Great for a medium venue. |
