Hi. My name is Mark an I am new to the club. I just purchased (and am waiting to receive via UPS) my Brown Bass. Yes, I will register it as soon as I get it... I am very excited as this is my first Alembic. I have always wanted a short scale 4 string, and now I am getting one.

If anyone has any info on what I can expect, I would appreciate it.

As soon as I get the bass I will post some pictures. Best to all.

Mark, welcome to the most awesome and friendliest bass club in the world! You will probably hear from the others soon.

i want a brown bass too although i want the long scale standard point body style. Wait a minute- now i'm not sure what they mean by "brown bass"- i assumed this was referring to the dark wood basses with mahogany cores, or are they talking about a small standard body with dark woods like stanley clarke's bass? anyone?

I believe that the term Brown Bass refers to the model pictured at the store:

But like other models I would imagine you could order yours with a standard point body and long scale neck. Note that the Brown Bass differs from an SC model in a number of ways, including the controls. There are a couple pictured here:

Mark; congratulations! See this thread where Mica describes the sound of the Brown Bass as "buttery":

So if the neck woods include mahogany, and a combo of maple and walnut- just so long as it has mahogany in it, the bass should sound buttery and not so brittle? The neck woods influence the sound the most? i thought i read this somewhere on this forum.

Randall; I am not an authority on the subject, have never owned a Brown Bass, and would not want to mislead you. As Mica stated in the "Series bass question" thread, in a neck-through "the neck is the most influential wood for the tone". The Brown Bass has much less Maple in the neck than most Alembics; on the other hand my basses have all Maple necks. It is my guess that one contributing factor to the "buttery" sound of a Brown Bass would be the significant difference in neck woods, especially the abundance of Mahogany. However, the body woods do contribute as well; and it would be my guess that a bass with the mahogany, maple, walnut neck combined with an all Maple body would not sound the same as a Brown Bass. Note also that unlike most other Alembics the Brown Bass has a Myrtle body wood. I have no idea how significant this difference is, but I'm guessing there is some effect. There have been many good posts in the past, by members that know a lot more than I, on the subject of neck woods, body woods, and their contribution to tone. If you have the time I would suggest using the search template to find some of these older threads, especially looking for posts by Mica. You can also find comments from Mica on woods by reading throught the Custom Archives at the main Alembic site. One thing I find intriguing is the reverence with which some members speak of the contribution of a coco-bolo top to the sound of the bass. So while the neck woods may be the most influential, the body woods are a significant factor as well. I find it a fascinating subject and one of the pleasures of reading the posts in this forum.

Welcome to the club Mark!

Congrats on the new Alembic! Of course, you know we need pics ;)

You will have a good time here, or else. Just kidding, but not about the good time... ah you know what I mean.

The only thing that I can add about what to expect is, expect to be overjoyed and amazed that you went so long without an Alembic :-)
