I've been hit with the modifying bug, and am interested in upgrading my Epic with a low-pass filter/Q-switch.

Does anyone have any experience with this setup on an Epic? I'd love to hear opinions, etc.

Also, what's the best way to order the upgrade kit?

IIRC, someone thought they were around $250, anyone know if that's still the case?

Thanks.

Definitely search around, there's been quite a few threads. Here's one, for instance: http://alembic.com/club/messages/393/31125.html?1159930026

Jack,

Good call, I suppose I should have started there. See what happens when you're lazy.

BTW, that link you added was pretty good.

Hey man, I wrote the book on lazy, so no worries there. Definitely post an update if you do it.

I was thinking about it for a long time, which is why I looked up the relevant threads, but in the end my situation worked out that I just picked up an Essence (I mean, if it's 300 or whatever for the upgrade, well you're already a little bit down the road to another bass). A lot of people here love their filters and Qs for sure, and I really dig the filter on the Essence (am considering getting a Q for it), but I'm glad I didn't just get upgrade on the Epic. The Epic was my only bass for ten years and I was very used to the sound and controls. I dig the Essence, and I honestly haven't picked up the Epic since I got the Essence (only a month ago) but I'm still not sure which I'll take to my next gig... in other words, there's something to be said for familiarity, and bass/treble cut/boost is very simple to use on stage. To each his own though, I think most on here will tell you to go for it, and I can't really argue.

That thread in 2006 reported the cost at $300. There have been two price increases since then, so it could be $350 today. Ask Mica directly, or wait for her to notice this thread if you're patient.

The best way to order it is to call the Alembic office during work hours and place an order. Any other way is too much time consuming.

There are 2 versions of the upgrade: 2-way and 3-way Q-switch. Do a search on differences. Also, don't forget the mouting hardware (Q-switch is smaller and will not fit the hole by itself).

Setup is simple. All you need is bit of patience to squeeze all the modules into the cavity (I had to change the layout of controls due to geometry of the cavity) and make sure the modules do not touch the outer walls.

Change of sound: Removing the bass control did take some of the low end away but the increase in responsivness and dynamics is worth it. The tone is richer and if I need more if the low end I now have to add it on the amp.

So, did you notice that adding the low pass/Q-switch allowed you to dial out some of the brightness? I'm not real satisfied with the bass/trebel controls.

I love the clarity of the instrument, but am still finding it bright and zingy.

My goal is to dial in more variey of tones. I'm wondering if it's possible with the epic, or if I would be better served with a different model.

My Epic has the filter and q-switch. I also have an Orion with the bass/treble controls. I use my Epic almost exclusively because of the filter and Q. I have a 5-string Orion with Essence electronics and I am considering adding the Q switch. I think the filter will give you what you are looking for. There is a picture of my Epic in the showcase. Everything fit well. According to the build sheet it did not have the upgrade from the factory so it should all fit for you too. You will love it...Joel

Hi Joe,
Here's a link to a discussion about the AE-2 filter added to an Epic. I opted for the 3 position Q switch, and am VERY happy I did!
