Time for a profile moment... If you could pick one drummer, who would you go with that embodies your best bass playing style and accents? |

I may be in the minority here, but I've always been of the opinion that less is definitely more with a drummer. Someone who can play quietly, and doesn't feel the need for 37 cymbals and a gong is a good sign. For that matter, why use a drummer at all? Bluegrass as a genre does pretty well without one. All that being said, the drummer in our band is simply incredible, and it makes a huge difference in the quality of everyone's playing to have him around. |

At the moment, I don't have a "bass playing style". Recent evidence suggests that if I keep practicing everyday, perhaps I might have one in another year or two, or three, or some other significant period of time. |

I am very lucky in that I have already found my dream drummer - Greg DeGuglielmo. He's the drummer on most of my recordings. He is influenced by several of the people mentioned in this thread - kind of a combination of Mickey Hart & Bill Kreutzmann, but also jazz drummers like Tony Williams, Jack DeJohnette, etc., plus Mike Clark, Jim Keltner, Steve Gadd, etc. etc., just an all around musical guy! He can lay down the fattest groove, and then be improvising with the ability to head in a different direction in an instant. If I had to choose one "famous" drummer, it would probably be Jack DeJohnette, especially from the "Live Evil" phase... |

Okay, so I did a search for the Drum Rudiments. It's been a while since I saw a page full of english words, and had absolutely no clue what half of them were. However, I can guess their meaning, given the onomatopoeia'ic nature of most of the words. And they look really fun to use in daily conversation: "Hey Bob, did you hear the flam paradiddle diddle, and the ratamacue in that last song? I sure like it." "Yeah I heard, but I prefer a little more flamacue, and pataflafla in my music." /and so forth |

An understanding of Drum Rudiments to a Drummer is much like an understanding of Musical Scales or words or letters of the alphabet in language. |

Hi Guys, Nice topic. I've been saying for years out of all the drummers 'out there' Steve Gadd is the one drummer who'd 'scare me' to play with. He's just sooo...darn good. Weckl's no slouch, Cobham, White, Williams, they're all greats and I'd love to hit some 'serious' groove with any of 'em but Steve Gadd is in a league of his own. IMHO Best Regards, Kimberly |

"Yeah, he's got chops too... A Frank Zappa Drummer, like Terry Bozzio. I knew his name was familiar... " You're thinking of Ralph Humphrey. He was a drummer in Zappa's band in the early 70's. Played on 'Overnite Sensation' and 'Apostrophe' among other things. |

I remember Ray White, Frank Zappa's Rhythm Guitarist would stop by my drummers house to Jam with us. Ray loved my Series I, and I would just listen to his stories of upcoming gigs with Frank and the gang. Paul name came up a lot in those days, and he did play a few sets with Zappa too. |

"Phil Collins listen to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmP8NC2EOLE slawie" I love Brand X. What a completely amazing band that was. Shame that most people have no idea who they are. As insane as Phil's drumming could be with the Gabriel era Genesis he really got a chance to stretch out in Brand X. "I think Paul played on 'Hot Rats'." I consulted The Book of Armaments and it appears you are correct, sir. If you're a Zappa freak that site is pretty much the best. LOTS of great information in one place about the huge list of musicians that played in his bands, live performances, albums, etc... We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread topic. |

Phil Collins would be my strong third choice. Before all the Disney, Genesis... and his solo with Rappers (Bone Thugs and Harmony) it was BRAND X where I respect his drumming style. Both, Phil and Percy Jones was the band. Yeah, Phil is my #3 guy! |

Bill Brufford (I always loved King Crimson) Stewart Copeland (The Police have turned me back to rock when I was getting freak on Fusion) Max Roach (well, don't need to say anything) Elvin Jones (if I can wish, I don't choose the BEST drummer/musician of all times?) |

Oh, sorry... for the style I play? João Parahyba. Not as well known as Airto, this guy plays Timba - one single long drum - with brushes and cymbals incredibly making all sounds you could wish from a drum set. He plays with Trio Mocotó and is better than any drummer on playng "sambarock". He played with Jorge Ben(jor) in the early 60's and, since then, played along with the greatest (as Chico Buarque, Miles Davies and Sarah Vaughan). Recently one french musical producer discovered one forgotten tape from Dizzie Gillespie playing with Mocotó. He is currently trying to release it, but seems there are some legal issues regarding who is the legal tape's owner. |

Okay a little off topic, but Mario's post got me thinking about the Cajon. Incredibly, the instrument does pretty much what Mario describes, imitating many of the sounds from a drum kit. Here is a demonstration I dug up real fast: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4J3FmmKdZUw Sorry to threadjack. |

Greg Errico--killer backbeat, but solid, solid groove. Doesn't rush, doesn't lag, doesn't fill up a lot of space. One half(the other half being Larry Graham)of what was arguably one of the best rhythm sections of all time. |

I know Scott Rockenfield of Queensryche wouldn't make everybody's list but in my opinion he's a powerhouse. I'd love to play a gig with him. Rich |

"my dream drummer is ,one that gets to the gig early, keeps good time.and knows when not to solo." Stephen has the same ideals as I do in a drummer!!! :-D |

I've been gigging with my favorite drummer in all the world, Will Cox. It's as though he reads my mind before I know what I'm thinking. I know I am truly blessed. John |

That's really cool John - that is when you know the magic is happening, when two (or more) minds effortlessly float through a song. I should add to my earlier post,,, I also like a drummer who isn't afraid to practice on his own! Band practice is for the band,,,, not the drummer to 'try out some new stuff that he was thinking about'. |

Hendrixclarke: you forgot one ;) I nominate Tony Allen of Fela Kuti Fame. Talk about meter. The man is a rock. He also just released a fantastic new afrobeat album reminiscent of his time with Fela. |

I actually did a Country gig in a Bar that had a chicken wire cage around the stage ,I think it was in the early to mid 1980's .The replacement substitute drummer in that band was awful!. Once in a while he would drop a beat in 4/4 ;so I used to refer to him as the "Three Lagged Dog". He was buddies with the leader of the band so he was hard to get rid of .I remember waiving my Bass neck up and down with the beat when that happened so that he could fall back into sync. The only reason that I keep playing in that band was because the leader had good connections and good gigs _ for the most part anyway, and I was single at the time and would meet some really nice Ladies from time to time at those gigs . |

I was on the road with "The Toys" working with a drummer similar in style and fire as Vinnie. It was a gas, loved every minute of it. |

I've been lucky enough to play with some really tight, good drummers. But also unlucky to have sat in with some who couldn't count through breaks. To answer the question of style, the wierd thing is I CAN'T PLAY S**T with a bad drummer. I need a drummer with a tight syncopated style. As mentioned above Stewart Copeland would fit. |

Since we are talking about drummers that suit our own style, here are drummers that I would like to play with: Ringo Starr. He isn't flashy but I remember reading an article where Paul McCartney called him the best time keeper he had ever played with. On that same note, (no pun intended), Paul's long time drummer Abe Laboriel Jr. More flashy than Ringo but also knows when to sit back and just keep the beat. Kenny Arnoff. The guy has played with everyone for obvious reasons. Don Brewer (Grand Funk Railroad, Bob Seger) He can play any style and is very smooth. Joey Kramer. Steven Tyler and Joe Perry get all the attention but Kramer is the best musician in the band. By the way, isn't it about time that Tom Hamilton starts getting recognized for being one of rock's best bass players? Steve Smith. He rose to fame with Journey but is recognized as one of the best jazz and session drummers in the world. Phil Collins and Ginger Baker. Neil Peart. His style wouldn't really match well with mine but hes is one of the best drummers in the world. |
