Here is a question I've been dying to get an answer for. Who did the scroll work on the upper horn of the early Alembic's? Was it Mr. Smith of Hyak fame, or was it several builders? Were there many builders in the early days? Did he/she have certain characteristics that are easily discernable as belonging to an individual builder?

Being the owner of a scrolled Hyak I have pondered the same question. I don't recall seeing very many Alembics with the scroll, the Richard Betts guitar recently posted has shed another light onto the scroll history for me. This sounds like a good question for some of the elders here.
