Tone wise. They have more mids than a neck through but have a wide rang of tones available. Mine have more elaborate guts than standard but are still punchy and can do what is needed. They are comfortable, look great are a good value. You are moving from a high quality neck-through to a very high quality set-neck. My recollection is that your Carvin was Walnut while the Excel is probably Ash. Between the differences in construction and wood, I expect you are going to hear a lot more midrange and "punch". I just read Danno's post... What he said!!!
