I love wireless things... Anybody using Nady or other wireless systems for your Alembics... I am very sure this discussion came up before, but who knows what technology brings these days in current musical circles.

What's should I be looking for?

You'd be a fool to buy anything but the X2 at this point.

X2 XDS95

I have two of that model. I use a Godlyke power supply for the receiver to save on batteries. The transmitter battery lasts me (on average) 8 to 9 hours.

I'm guessing they are on clearance right now because Line 6 is going to be releasing an updated version... but you didn't hear that from me.

I can already hear a herd of people lining up to say "I have a <insert> and I love it". Great. If you're buying NEW and buying it NOW - get an X2 and just be done with it. You won't be able to hear a difference between the X2 and a very nice high end cable. Period. It doesn't alter your sound. It doesn't compress the signal.

The ONLY exception is if you're playing huge stages all over the world regularly. Then you'd be well off to spend several thousand dollars on something like the Sure UR14S.

The old Nady 201 True Diversity turns up on ebay fairly regularly and can be had for a song - often less than $50. I've used one for years with no trouble other than a couple of times where something was interfering with the signal and I had to switch to a cord. If you do a search on "Nady 201" you'll find previous discussions where others have had similar experiences. It's a cheap way to check out wireless.

Bill, tgo

random little question, i've been wanting to experience wireless play, would it be possible to run it from my bass to effects board so i could leave it next to my amp and not worry about hitting it walking around on stage?

Hi Hal,

I am a big fan of wireless and of Nady. I am always surprised when someone denigrates Nady's products based upon experiences with one line. Nady was at the forefront of wireless, especially in the old days when you got a transmitter beltpack and a radio tuner for a receiver. You would have to find white space on the FM dial and tune your transmitter to that, but I digress.

First, is the wireless just for playing in your house? Urban areas are generally more frequency dense than suburban areas because of more broadcasting sources. That means you may need a unit that is programmable (multi-frequency). Will there be other people that you are playing with and will they be wireless (if so, you need to coordinate frequencies)? Will you be touring? All of these questions will help you decide how much flexibility you need in your wireless.

Next, the question is will you be using it with Series instruments? That is a technical challenge unique to these models. There was a Japanese website that showed how to make a wireless box, but I could only look at the pictures.

In these days, I would agree with both Brian and Bill. I have heard nothing but good things about the X2 model. I have owned several Nady models (49, 101, 201, 500, 700, 950GS). Now I have the Shure U4S (predecessor to Brian's link) because of it's programmability and flexibility. But since I only play my Series bass now, I never use it!

Wireless units are constantly changing when dynamic range improves and because of digital TV taking up bandwith that was previously open. If the Nady 201 works in your situation, it will probably be the cheapest solution. The Shure is the "gold standard." The X2 or X-wire is a good compromise.

Hi, folks
I just wanted to share my experience about wireless system. The point is that I have always been told that these systems, except the very good ones ( so the very expensive ones..) were good, and I would have to spend a lot of money in a reliable one.
I read threads and tried the Line6 Relay G30, and man, I was blown away by its quality!!! I play on a 5 string Mark King Signature, and after having made blind tests with several people of my band (including the sound engineer), we could not hear the difference between playing with or without the wireless system.
The sound is really awesome on the whole range of the instrument, and the price is not that high.
A little word for Taylor : I also use the Line6 M13 (effect processor) right after the receiver, and I have no problem at all.
If you have a chance, try this system, I guess you'll be convinced.

How can one product beat X2's 10Hz low range?

I don't know any transmiter who can get that low, they usually goes all way up, but start on 40Hz (or even higher, as 60Hz). Never tryed X2, but it has some unbeatable specs...

"random little question, i've been wanting to experience wireless play, would it be possible to run it from my bass to effects board so i could leave it next to my amp and not worry about hitting it walking around on stage?"

That X2 model that I linked to above is designed to fit on a pedalboard. Which is exactly where I have mine. I have a Morley A/B switch setup where one input is the wireless and the other is a Mogami gold 18' cord "just in case". I've had to switch to the cord mid-song twice now - both due to me not checking the battery level before the set started.

The X2 is the same technology as the X-Wire. The full story is long and drawn out about what happened to X-Wire, the technology, and now the X2 finally. A lot of it is heresay - so I'll not go into it. I owned an X-Wire for several years. When the X2 was released I preordered one. I A/B'd it with the X-Wire. There is no difference - mostly because both sound like a very nice cord is plugged directly from the instrument to the amp.

Is there a 5 pin remote module -- like there is with the 1/4" jack system?

Somewhere in the forum there was a link to a webpage that showed a 5-pin interface module. I believe that it was based upon the unit that Mark King of Level 42 used. Someone a little more advanced can probably do a search and post a link.

Nady 201 user here, since 1992. Only once it went noisy, other than that, had no frills with it. However, I've been wanting to try an X2 myself for some time, BTW, since it was mentioned some time ago on the BP Lowdown forum by Brian and other guys there (Hi Brian, what's up?)

I'm not a fan of Nady. I am using a Sennheiser wireless that I love. It has great range and doens't make any noise.

I use an X2 for live performances myself, no issues at all. Having said that they are not the only digital wireless product out there. Most of the standard wireless product manufacturers are developing digital products, partly motivated by the audio quality, the changes in available broadcast bandwidths etc.

If you look for one, check the latency specs. the X2 is something like a 2 ms., not enough to disturb eeryone but the most discerning of ears.
