Had this issue been addressed? What would be a good reward if your bass was found and recovered by a good citizen? Just thought I ask... Peace and Love, Hal- |

Actually I was wondering about this recently. I am kind of surprised that stolen alembics are not recovered on a more regular basis. I mean, they are kind of rare and ebay and craigslist seem to be popular avenues for selling Alembics so surely the stolen was should pop up more than they do. |

I would think if the thief stole it for his/her own use at home or studio or if it was sold privately to someone who did not play in public it would be very difficult to find. I know many of us are very keen at detecting alembics and i guess we are all kind of in-house private detectives with our eyes and ears open for the stolen ones. But as we've read many times on these threads, many others ( including bass players) have never heard of alembics so wouldn't recognise one if it was being sold to them from a dodgy seller. It would be interesting what the recovery rate is for stolen alembics, and the recovery prospects of anyone caught stealing or returning Keavins no12. Jazzyvee |

I thought about this too when mine was stolen. I did offer a reward, but never decided how much. I did expect the bass to 'show up' as there aren't many Alembics in Ireland at all, but in all the time it was gone (18 months) I didn't hear a thing about an Alembic anywhere, and I looked! In the end we found who stole it and that lead to its recovery. I was very lucky, I know. So was the guy who stole it as I never got my honds on him. - Rob. |

While the recovery prospects of any stolen items aren't very good, I would guess that they would be WAY better than the recovery prospects for anyone caught stealing Kevin's #12! As for rewards, I don't really think they add any real incentive, unless they're huge. Not sure some random person would turn in a friend / acquaintence just for a reward (first hand experience as a victim of such a theft). Obviously, any one of us that spots a stolen Alembic will report it even if there's no reward, as would any reputable music dealer. If you then choose to thank that person with a small token of your appreciation, that's nice and probably appropriate. Just my opinion of course... |

4 doors I could think of: Door 1. The bass was stolen, and not recovered. Door 2. The bass was stolen, but I have insurance. Door 3. The bass was stolen, but I recovered it. Door 4. The bass was stolen, but Insurance paid my loss claim, and years later, I just happened to eventually recovered my bass. Door 4. "The rich get's richer..." Keavin's #12 has a locater in it I believe...so the person would only have a short time in which to remain on this planet without a ligature or whacking stick being involved. (Message edited by paulman on February 05, 2010) (Message edited by paulman on February 05, 2010) |

As far as #4 goes above, you were compensated and no longer own the bass in question, the insurance company owns it. |

Keavin, RIGHT ON TO YOUR SOLUTION! It's very creative, and I may consider doing the same. For those who are too scared to add any suggestion, or feel the topic is not worth your time, take a cool glance and move on...(there's nothing to see here...) I am sure there's something on another thread that will floats your boat, so please take your negativity somewhere else... Anyway, following Keavin's leadership, I found some very small and neat little tracking devices which could be inserted in places of your bass (installed before your bass becomes a prime target...), which may help you recover you bass in seconds. The CATSi, (pronounced cat's eye), is designed to track almost anything, from pets and people through to cars, trucks and anything. CATS-i is world’s smallest, thinnest and most covert GPS, GSM and RF tracking device ever. With this kind of system and small as it is, you'll probably catch the criminal within seconds. Now as far as rewards goes, it's a personal question. What is your bass worth to you, and how much money can you pay to have it returned "No questions asked, and dropping all charges..." Peace and Love, and may you seek knowledge even under a grain of sand. Hal- (Message edited by the_jester on February 05, 2010) |

Keavin, I agree. GPS for children is also a beautiful idea. However, I am not sure about the safety of such devices and the possible long term negative effects it may have on human cells. However, using a tracking device inside my Alembic, does not have the same implications. I actually seen a person (while shopping) place a wrist band attached chain, on their young child, and it made me wonder, what kind of monster would invent such a device. Anyway, I prefer to talk about Alembic security instead. Peace and Love, Hal- |

A nice rifle/gun safe works , just make sure the dimensions are appropriate for the Alembics in their case's. One can build additional fire protection to position the rifle safe in such as a cabinet that is lined with gypsum/fire-board or embedded in concrete in a wall. Motion detectors on the walls and magnetic reed switch's can be installed on all the doors .A closed circuit camera surveillance system can be an easy start. HAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAA HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAA HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!! That was beautiful Wolf! Oh my goodness, your read my mind to a "T". I-kid-you-not... I was actually looking at rifle Safes at in at least 45" inch (diagonal height) from Costco. Haaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaa That was a joyful laughter of myself in addressing my own paranoia. I'll be showing pictures of my Alembic Safely places in my Vaulted Safe soon. Peace and Love, Hal- (Message edited by the_jester on February 06, 2010) |

Hal , I was at Costco Too recently and may have seen the same model safe. LOL ! It looked OK but had external hinges. However it did look nice and even had a nice large chrome twirl handle on it ! |

Back to the seriousness of this discussion and nature therein, I checked our local Costco warehouse, and seen a perfect safe. The safe looked like it could physically hold up to(4) full scale Alembic basses -- plenty of head room and inner space or gaps allowed, so the basses don't rub up against each other. The unit price is $499.00 and the whole unit wights 500 pounds. It has a digital combination and a nice size grip wheel, on the vaulted heavy doors. |

Check to see if it had external hinges.(easy to defeat) I personally would stay away from an electronic digital combination lock. If you wanted to fit in a full size standard point (wide) case you need the safe's inside dimensions to be at least 20"deep; that way you can put the Bass's in a row instead of a pile. |

Yeah, I don't really like the safe idea... Safes are just too "dog-on" heavy. I don't need to have my house look like something from a western.. "Well's Fargo Bank deposit" When I am on travel, The bass will just be tracked/stored in my new anvil case; locked inside the trunk of my car; contained inside a locked garage. That's enough of a steel barrier, and fangs of an Akita... (Message edited by the_jester on February 07, 2010) |

I left my bass outside my church after locking up and was return by the guy who found it that night. I offered a reward of $200.00 but he said no thanks, He said that the bass looked expensive and just wanted to return it to it owner. If some other person would have found it I would have never seen it again. |

Dang Ronald... you left it outside??? I can't say much: I left ALL my basses in my hall closet when we left town for a series of gigs around the SE. I didn't realize it until sound check the first night. Doh!!!!! |

I did that once. Left a Series 2 in its' case on my drummer's porch in Schenectady, NY after practice. Thankfully it was brought inside and not stolen. Always figured it was payback for discovering a stolen Alembic in a store and helping it get back to its' rightful owner after a good many years. For the record, I was not offered a reward, nor did I expect one. |
